LAFC Look to Knock Off The Union Again

There’s no doubt that when LAFC and Philadelphia Union share the field that fans are entertained. Last year they played to a 2-2 draw in Los Angeles in the regular season. The MLS Cup Final, also in LA, was decided on penalties as Gareth Bale scored in the 128th minute to save LAFC. Last week they met in Philadelphia in the first leg, and both teams scored after the 85th minute for a 1-1 draw.
Tuesday’s game will be back in Los Angeles at BMO Stadium. LAFC can afford a 0-0 draw since they scored in Philadelphia for an away goal, but don’t expect either of these teams to sit back. If they draw 1-1 again, then the game goes to penalties, while any draw above 1-1 sends the Union through, The Union have never made a Champions League Final, and LAFC lost their only final, to UANL in 2020.
LAFC are 4-0-0 at home this season in MLS play, but they did lose at home in this competition to Costa Rican side Alajuelense in March. They sit in third place in the MLS Western Conference with an overall record of 5-0-3, and they have played two less games than the teams ahead of them. The Black and Gold have scored three goals in four of their last five games.
The Union have struggled to start the season, sitting in 10th place with a 3-4-2 MLS record. They are winless on the road in four games and have a +1 goal differential. Away from home in the CCL, the Union have two draws, one in El Salvador and one in Mexico.

Tigres and Leon Meet Again

In a weird quirk of the schedule, Tigres UANL and Club Leon are meeting for the third time in a week. Tigres won at home 2-1 last week in the CONCACAF Champions League to take the lead in this semifinal tie. They met in Leon on Sunday in Liga MX Clausura action, and Leon won 3-0.
Both teams are headed for the Clausura qualification playoffs, which start next weekend. Leon finished sixth in the standings, while UANL were right behind them in seventh after Sunday’s loss.
As far as CCL history goes, the Tigres have more than their Liga MX counterparts. They won the 2020 title over LAFC and have been runners-up three times. Leon has made just one final, losing in 1993 to Costa Rican side Saprissa.
Leon has seen four different players score in the last week against Tigres. UANL got both of their goals in the first leg in the 45th minute, and they need more of that magic on Wednesday night at Estadio Leon.
