2022 MLS Season Recap

2023 opening odds chalk Los Angeles FC, or LAFC, beat the Philadelphia Union in the MLS Championship. Many soccer fans feel the title contest was the greatest in Major League Soccer history.

The trophy contest ended 3-3 in regulation. Los Angeles FC player Gareth Bale led the victors to a 3-0 penalty shootout win. Although Bale has retired from playing for the club, LAFC will enter the 2023 MLS Season the favorites. Philadelphia is second choice, followed by NYFC the third choice.

2023 MLS Season Picks

Top Pick: Philadelphia Union +650

Philly Union almost beat LAFC in the title match. The reason? Philadelphia sends the best defense in MLS to the pitch.

The Union sports top MLS goalie Andre Blake. Blake has won MLS Goalie of the Year 3-times. To improve the defense, Philadelphia traded for Damion Lowe, who played at Inter Miami last season.

If Joaquin Torres, a CF Montreal player in 2022 and an excellent 1-on-1 dribbler, is everything Union expects him to be, Philly will turn the tables on LAFC in the title rematch.

Second Pick: Los Angeles FC +460

Once again, the Los Angeles Football Club is loaded. Sure, LAFC lost Gareth Bale to retirement, Christian Arango to Liga MX champion Pachuca, and Latif Blessing to New England via a trade, but like the Kansas City Chiefs, LAFC just reloads.

New addition Aaron Long was the 2018 MLS Defender of the Year. 2022 Golden Boy Award finalist Stipe Buik is also an LAFC member. The Golden Boy Award goes to the best young soccer player in Europe. It’s a massive accomplishment just to get nominated.

Timothy Tillman, another addition, played for Greuther Furth in the Bundesliga last season. So although LAFC lost some players, they reloaded with quality.

Third Pick: Los Angeles Galaxy +1100

After Philly Union and the Los Angeles Football Club, there’s a huge drop off to the next contender. New York Football Club offers lower odds than the Galaxy, which is the reason to make the Galaxy third choice.

LA Galaxy lost Kevin Cabral, Samuel Grandsir, and Julian Araujo. LAG picked up Chris Mavinga and Memo Rodriguez.

Make no mistake, Philadelphia and LAFC must fall apart for a team like the Galaxy to win. But if you don’t want to back Union or Los Angeles, the Galaxy is as good of a pick as any.

Top Underdog Pick: Atlanta United FC +2200

On paper, Atlanta United shouldn’t come close to upsetting LAFC or Philly Union. But key acquisitions: Giorgos Giakoumakis from Celtic FC, Derrick Etienne Jr., who had 9 goals and 6 assists last season with Columbus, and Luis Abram, who played for Granada in La Liga, will help Atlanta be competitive.

Not only that, but MLS ATL should have the most fans on average show up to their stadium. Fan support goes a long way in Major League Soccer. So give Atlanta United a look if you want to back a big time underdog.
