Top 2022 MLS Matches to Bet On: Hudson River Derby, and Texas Derby Highlights Weekend Action

After the international break in June, the month of July is a very busy one for MLS teams. All 28 teams will be in action this weekend with seven games on Saturday and seven more on Sunday. Of those teams, 22 played on either Tuesday or Wednesday this week and a handful will play exhibition games next week against European teams.

Most teams have now played 20 of the 34 games in the regular season and the contenders are starting to separate from the pretenders. The last two weeks have been full of rivalry games throughout the league and that continues this weekend. The biggest games not only include those rivalry battles, but they are battles for positioning in the standings. It’s time to look at the best games for the weekend so you can place your bets against their MLS Odds.

Hudson River Derby

With apologies to Columbus Crew v. FC Cincinnati, the biggest game in the Eastern Conference this weekend is the Hudson River Derby. Sunday’s contest on ESPN will take place at Red Bull Arena as the Red Bulls host NYCFC.

Heber scored in the first half for NYCFC on Wednesday as they won 1-0 at FC Dallas while RBNY had the week off. The win moved NYCFC above the Red Bulls and into second place with 35 points, two more than their rivals. Taty Castellanos leads the Pigeons, and the league, with 12 goals. Castellanos has four career goals against the Red Bulls while Heber has two.

In MLS action, the Red Bulls lead the series 10-6 with three draws and they have outscored NYCFC 35-22. Last year they won at home and on the road 1-0 while the teams also drew 1-1 at Red Bull arena. NYCFC’s last win in the series came 5-2 at Red Bull Arena on November 1, 2020.

Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel has two clean sheets in three starts against NYCFC while allowing just one goal and making 10 saves. NYCFC’s Sean Johnson has 13 starts against the Red Bulls with two clean sheets, 42 saves and 17 goals allowed.

At MyBookie, The Red Bulls are favored at home, listed at +112. NYCFC is +215 to win across the river in New Jersey while a draw is +255. The total goals is listed at 2.5 with the over at -129 and the under at -102.

Texas Derby Take Two

Technically the Texas Derby includes three teams, FC Dallas, Austin FC and Houston Dynamo as they form a triangle and face each other twice a season. Already in July, Austin FC beat Houston 3-1 and FC Dallas drew with the Dynamo 2-2. And just a couple weeks ago, Austin rallied from two goals down to earn a draw with FC Dallas 2-2.

Now Austin FC and FC Dallas are ready to face off again, Saturday night at Toyota Stadium in Frisco. Austin heads into the contest in first place in the Western Conference after beating Houston on Tuesday. Meanwhile Dallas fell from third to sixth place with their loss to NYCFC on Wednesday.

Jesus Ferreira has 11 goals on the season for Dallas and he has scored four times in three career games against Austin. Paul Arriola and Brendon Servania scored against Austin last month while goalkeeper Maarten Paes made two saves.

Diego Fagundez, Maxi Urruti and Alexander Ring scored for Austin on Tuesday. Sebastian Druissi leads the team with 11 goals and also has four assists. Austin has enver beat Dallas in four games with Fagundez scoring twice against FCD but goalkeeper Brad Stuver has allowed 11 goals.

In each of their last three games, Austin FC has scored exactly three goals. They have more than one goal in five of their last seven games while FC Dallas has allowed more than one goal in four of their last six games. The rough defense is something new for Dallas as they allowed zero or one goal in each of their first eight league games

At MyBookie, FC Dallas is the home favorite at -114 while Austin FC is +290 to take all three points. A draw is  +260. Over 2.5 goals is listed at -147 and under 2.5 goals is +111.
