Betting Top Races: Queen Elizabeth II plus 4 More Stakes

The annual Royal Ascot meet takes place this July. One of the top horse racing meets of the year will happen without Queen Elizabeth II for the first time in decades. Because it’s Royal Ascot week, our top stakes races blog starts on Wednesday with the Grade 1 Prince of Wale’s.

Check out more info on the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes as well as four more of this week’s top horse racing stakes races.

Top Stakes Races for the Week: Wednesday, June 21 – Saturday, June 24, 2023

Prince of Wale’s Stakes | Grade 1

1 ¼ miles turf – 4-year-olds & up
Ascot Racecourse | Ascot, England
Wednesday, June 21

Only six appear to be running in the Prince of Wale’s Stakes on Wednesday. Among the six, the one we’re most familiar with is Kenny McPeek trained Classic Causeway.

No doubt, the son of Giant’s Causeway is going to attract action from U.S. bettors. But it’s difficult seeing Classic Causeway go off the chalk. Charlie Appleby trained Adayar, Bay Bridge, trained by Sir Michael Stoute, and Aidan O’Brien trained Luxembourg will have fans. So will My Prospero from the William Haggas barn and John Gosden trained Mosdahdaf.

Norfolk Stakes | Grade 2

5 furlongs turf – 2-year-olds
Ascot Racecourse | Ascot, England
Thursday, June 22

2-for-2 Karl R. Burke trained Elite Status will be the morning line favorite. But Elite Status won’t go off the chalk.

First, the field projects to have up to 24 horses. Second, Wesley Ward plans on shipping American Rascal, Ward’s last out maiden winner. Wesley has won races at Royal Ascot before. So horseplayers will make American Rascal the chalk.

A couple from the Aidan O’Brien barn, His Majesty and Johannes Brahms, will attract action. So will another Ward runner, Fandom.

Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes | Grade 1

6 furlongs turf – 4-year-olds & up
Ascot Racecourse | Ascot, England
Saturday, June 24

American trainer Cristophe Clement plans on shipping Big Invasion to run in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Big Invasion ran second in the Grade 1 Jaipur on the Belmont Stakes undercard a couple of weeks ago.

The turnaround is fast, but Cristophe must feel Big Invasion has something left in the tank. Charlie Appleby trained Al Suhail finished third in the Grade 1 Al Quoz Spring in the last. Al Suhail will attract plenty of action. So will expected morning line favorite Artorius, the Grade 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest winner.

Brad Cox trained Matareya will go off the favorite. The Grade 1 Derby City Distaff winner also finished second behind Wicked Halo in the Matron on March 31 and won the Grade 1 Acorn last year.

Hidden Connection, the W. Bret Calhoun trained runner, will have her fans. Be Like Water, Stella Noir, Drifaros, and Society will also run.

Ohio Derby | Grade 3

1 1/8 miles dirt – 3-year-olds
Thistledown Racecourse | North Randall, Ohio
Saturday, June 24

Only a couple have committed to the Grade 3 Ohio Derby. Two Phil’s, the second place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, and Haye’s Strike.

Two Phil’s project to go off at underlay odds. Wait for the field to take shape later this week. Then, look to see if there is a horse that can beat Two Phil’s.
