Season Series

This is the first meeting of this season. Minnesota won three of four last year. Houston’s win on Jan. 23, 2023, snapped a seven-game losing streak, which was their longest in the all-time series. Minnesota has won eight of the past 10 games after losing 19 of 22 prior. The Wolves have won four of the past five in Houston after losing 14 straight prior from 3/15/13-3/10/20. Houston outrebounded Minnesota by 6.5 rebounds per game last season and the Rockets averaged 25.3 assists per game but also a whopping 22.3 turnovers to Minnesota’s 9.8.

Why Bet on Minnesota Timberwolves?

Minnesota is on its first two-game skid of the season following a 117-106 home loss to New Orleans on Wednesday. The Pelicans shot 55.6% from the field with Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram combining to shoot 18 of 26. New Orleans used a 25-9 run late in the first half to take control and extended the lead to 24 midway through the third quarter. The Timberwolves shot just 38.7% through three quarters. They finished with 13 turnovers, leading to 16 points for the Pelicans. Minnesota was the last team in the NBA to lose two in a row.

Anthony Edwards had 35 points, five assists and four rebounds in the loss. The former No. 1 overall pick has been on a tear after his nine-point effort against the Mavericks on Dec. 14, scoring 25 or more points in each of his last 10 appearances and hitting the 30-point mark seven times in that stretch. Overall, Edwards is 32.7 points per game in his last 10 contests.

Wednesday marked Edwards’ sixth 35+ point game this season (18th career) and his third 35+ point/5+ assists game this season (10th career). After scoring 35 points against the Knicks in the Wolves’ previous outing, Edwards became just the seventh player in franchise history to post consecutive 35+ point games and is now one such game shy of tying Karl-Anthony Towns for the franchise record of three consecutive 35+ point performances (spans two seasons; April 7, 2019 – Oct. 25, 2019).

Edwards has now tallied four consecutive 30+ point games, tying Kevin Garnett (March 22-28, 2000) for the second-most consecutive 30+ point games in franchise history, only Kevin Love (six consecutive 30+ point games from Feb. 10-25, 2014) has more. In shooting 10 free throws against the Pelicans, Edwards extended his career-long and franchise-long streak of games with 10+ free throw attempts to five. His five straight games with 10+ free throw attempts is the longest active streak in the NBA.

Towns produced 22 points but was just 8-for-19 from the field on Wednesday. It was his 20th 20+ point game this season (366th career) and his 19th 20+ point/5+ rebound game this season (356th career). Towns’s 356 career games with 20+ points and 5+ rebounds are second in franchise history, trailing only Garnett. Towns is averaging 20.9 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game over his last 10 appearances.

Fellow big man Rudy Gobert struggled on Wednesday and finished with five points and five rebounds. Gobert dealt with foul trouble in this game, which limited him to just 24 minutes of game time. However, even in those minutes, he wasn’t very productive.

Minnesota is 17-5 against the Western Conference, the most wins against Western foes by any team in the West. No key players are injured.

Why Bet on Houston Rockets?

Houston won its second straight game Wednesday, 112-101 over Brooklyn. The Nets led by to five within the first three minutes of the third quarter only to see Houston go on a 24-6 run, which was capped by Cam Whitmore’s third 3-pointer of the night. He finished with 11 points off Houston’s bench.

Alperen Sengun totaled 30 points, eight rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals over 34 minutes. Sengun has taken a massive leap forward this season and should be an All-Star. He’s going through his most productive stretch of the season after scoring 20-plus points in seven straight contests, averaging 28.1 points, 9.4 rebounds and 5.1 assists per contest in that span.

Overall this year, he’s averaging 21.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 5.2 assists while shooting 54.7% from the floor. Entering 2023-23, only four different players averaged at least 21.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg and 5.0 apg in a season while shooting 54.0% or better: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (2x), Giannis Antetokounmpo (5x), Wilt Chamberlain (3x) and Nikola Jokić (3x). Dating back to 1975-76, Sengun is the eighth different player (18th time over that span) to have reached his totals of points, rebounds and assists through a team’s first 32 games of a season.

Jalen Green had 14 points and eight rebounds and is averaging 16.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists over his last 10 games, a span in which he’s shooting just 40.1 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from deep. Fred VanVleet had 21 points and 10 assists. He has four double-doubles over his last nine outings, a span in which he’s averaging 19.6 points with 9.0 assists per game.

The Rockets outscored the Nets 38-25 in the third quarter and improved to 17-15 despite playing without starting forward Dillon Brooks, who missed his fourth straight game due to an oblique strain, and Tari Eason, because of left leg soreness. Houston did not pick up its 17th win until Game No. #69 last season and finished 22-60.

Houston is 15-4 in games in which it led by 10+ points this season (15-10 in 2022-23) and has 10 wins by double-digits (6 in 2022-23), including five by 20+ (2 in 2022-23). Houston is outscoring opponents by an average of 3.5 ppg this season. The Rockets ranked 28th in points differential in 2022-22 at -7.9 ppg. Houston is 14-3 when leading after three quarters of play this season (15-12 in 2022-23) and 3-12 when tied or trailing (7-48 in 2022-23). The Rockets are 3-4 in games decided by five or fewer points this season (9-8 in 2022-23), including 3-1 by three or fewer (5-4 in 2022-23).
