After Eriksen injury, Denmark’s Euro chances go up in flames

Heading into EURO 2020, Denmark looked like the tournament’s best underdog play. The Danes had beaten Austria 4-0 in a World Cup Qualifier, drawn 1-1 with Germany, and dumped Bosnia & Herzegovina 2-0 in a friendly.

Things looked good for Denmark until Christian Eriksen collapsed to the ground. Eriksen’s heart stopped. Paramedics revived the Inter Milan midfielder, but the damage had been done.

Try as they might, the Danes couldn’t hang with a team that under normal circumstances they probably would have dominated. Finland beat Denmark 1-0.

A subsequent 1-2 loss to Belgium on June 17 has all but ended Denmark’s dream of making the knockout stage. It’s a shame, but Eriksen is okay, which, ask any Denmark player or fan, is what’s most important.

Germany makes statement versus Portugal

In their first match against France, the Germans looked atrocious. The usual German machine didn’t seem to have it.

Mats Hummels, whom many regard as Deutschland’s top player, scored the goal against his own team that put France ahead. From there, the French cruised to a 1-0 victory.

In their second EURO 2020 match, after just 15 minutes, Ronaldo had already scored for Portugal. But Germany rallied to blitz Portugal 4-2.

The Germans take on the Hungarians in their next match. Unless Hungary does something special, Germany should win, which means Deutschland will stamp their ticket to the knockout stage.

Italy dominating, France and Spain playing below their talent levels

In Italy’s third match, Wales hung tough. It took the Italians until the thirty-ninth minute to score a goal against Wales.

But make no mistake, even though Italy didn’t destroy Wales by 2 to 3 goals, they remain the team to beat at this UEFA European Championships.

The Italians scorched Turkey 3-0 before dominating Switzerland 2-0. The 1-0 victory against Wales could have been by more, but Italy decided to leave something in the tank.

The Azurri’s performance is in sharp contrast to Spain’s and France’s. The French struggled to draw with Hungary in their first match.

If not for Hummels’ bone-headed own goal, France may have dropped their match versus Germany. But as badly as France has played, no team has disappointed as much as Spain.

The Spanish are 2 points behind Sweden and a point behind Slovakia in Group E. Spain drew against Spain and drew against Poland. If Spain doesn’t beat Slovakia, they’ll have to ready themselves for a long trip home.
