Golf Betting Preview for the 2022 PGA Tour Wyndham Championship Tournament

Overview

A mainstay on the PGA Tour schedule, the Wyndham Championship began as the Greater Greensboro Open in 1938. The tournament has been played every year outside of a two-year pause during World War II. Sam Snead picked up eight of his 82 career PGA Tour victories at this event including his final PGA Tour win here in 1965.

Last season’s tournament ended in epic fashion with six players competing in a sudden-death playoff. Kevin Kisner emerged as the victor, finishing the tournament with a total score of 265 and 15-under.

The purse for the season finale is $7.3 million with the winner’s share $1.314 million. The winner will also receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a two-year exemption on tour.

The Field

Will Zalatoris highlights the field as the top-ranked player teeing it up at Sedgefield. Four of six players from last year’s playoff will be back. The past three winners are back along with three-time champion Davis Love III.

Past FedEx Cup champions Billy Horschel and Justin Rose are in the field and notable international major champions Danny Willett and Shane Lowry.

Sponsorship exemptions were given to collegiate stars Chris Gotterup and Cole Hammer. Gotterup has fit right in on tour after completing his senior season in the spring. The 23-year-old has cashed in on four of his first six events during his rookie season.

Sedgefield Country Club

Sedgefield Country Club is a Donald Ross design par-70 that plays just over 7,100 yards. The course design features tight fairways and small greens, a typical feature in Ross designs.

With tree-lined fairways and thick rough, longer hitters don’t have the advantage over the shorter hitters at Sedgefield. The course is a second-shot layout, with precious iron shots key over driving distance.

The scorecard features a pair of gettable par 5s along with four par 3s and 13 par 4s. Both par 5s play under 550 yards and there are just two par 4s that run over 485 yards. Prior to last season’s winning score, the last five winners had scores at 20-under par or better.

Betting Favorites

Lowry and Zalatoris are the betting favorites heading into Thursday’s action. Lowry has a great shot to nab his first PGA Tour victory since winning the 2019 Open Championship while Zalatoris is still searching for his first victory.

Sungjae Im, Billy Horschel and Webb Simpson round out the top five favorites. Im comes to Greensboro after a T2 at the 3M Open two weeks ago. Horschel tees it up for the first time since a T21 at the Open and Simpson hopes to rekindle the magic of his first PGA Tour victory which happened here in 2011.
