NFL Rumors & News: QBs Takings The Headlines

Written by on March 2, 2021

We are now just a couple of weeks away from the start of free agency in the NFL, with March 17 the start date everyone is keeping an eye on. We have already seen some trades and major moves go through since the end of the season, but I imagine that things are about to get especially crazy in a couple of weeks. It is potential moves that are dominating the NFL rumor mill this week, including one or two that we did not see coming. One surprise that we did see was J.J. Watt heading to the Arizona Cardinals after most insiders had him going to the Browns. Check out the latest news in our weekly update so you can continue planning your bets against their NFL odds for the upcoming season.

The move was not without some controversy, as it was believed that Watt has taken to his Peloton profile to say that he was between the Browns, Bills, and Packers for his next team. Watt denied that little piece of news, saying that he doesn’t even own one of the exercise bikes. The fact that he went to the Cardinals suggests that little rumor may have been fabricated. As for his former teammate, the latest news out of Houston is that DeShaun Watson has met with the new head coach and has made it clear that he will not be playing another game for the Texans. We are still expecting a bit of a QB carousel this offseason, so that is a story to watch.

Speaking of QBs, we already know that Jared Goff will be playing his trade with the Lions next season, but word out of Detroit is that they might also be looking at a QB with their first pick in the draft. GM Brad Holmes has stated that he likes the QBs that are available this year, and with 2022 expected to be a weaker class, he might well be tempted to pick another play caller at #7. It’s tough to say what that might do for Goff’s frame of mind, but it might just light a fire under him.

One interesting option that will be out there in free agency is Alex Smith, who is rumored to be parting ways with the Washington Football Team. He returned against all the odds last season, but he was not expected to ever take the field until Washington fell into some injury issues. When Smith got the call, he instantly elevated the Washington offense and helped his team get to the postseason. Still, Washington do not see him as their QB solution, and while taking Smith would be a bit of a risk, a team would likely get him for a pretty decent deal.

When a team parts ways with a player, it is not always because they want him gone. One of the hottest tickets on the free agent market is going to be WR JuJu Smith-Schuster. While he and the Steelers would love to continue their relationship, the cap troubles in Pittsburgh make that happening very unlikely indeed. The Miami Dolphins have been mentioned when talking about JuJu, but the Raiders and Chargers are also believed to be interested.
