It all starts with this article, which will take a closer look at the current odds to win the Stanley Cup, and where teams might fall in the grand scheme of things. There are some definite favorites emerging, but will it be those teams that make a deep run? Let’s take a closer look.

Stanley Cup Favorites

The obvious favorite right now, as it has been for the majority of the season, is the Boston Bruins (+310). They have been far and away the best team in the league this season and will take the President’s Trophy for the best record in the NHL. The scary thing about the Bruins is that they really don’t appear to have any clear weaknesses. That they will also have home ice advantage through the postseason is also a nightmare for the other teams, as Boston is currently 30-3-3 in their own building.

As big a favorite as the Bruins are, it is not going to be an easy path out of the Eastern Conference. The Carolina Hurricanes (+790) look as though they could be an Eastern Conference Final type team, plus there are a couple of potential dark horses that need to be discussed, which we will get to in a minute.

Things are not quite as clear in the Western Conference, as we have a much tighter race going on there. The Colorado Avalanche (+560) to come out of the West, but the conference has very much been dog eat dog all season long.

Stanley Cup Dark Horses

While the Bruins and Hurricanes look like the teams to beat in the East, there are a couple of others who might yet have a say. The Toronto Maple Leafs (+840) are up there, but they make me more than a little nervous given how poor they have been in the postseason. More likely dark horse candidates in the East are the New Jersey Devils (+1050) and the Tampa Bay Lightning (+1425), a team with a ton of playoff experience that might just come in handy once the playoffs begin.

Over in the Western Conference, the team that immediately jumps out right now is the LA Kings (+1650), as they are on a hot streak that might well carry over into the postseason. This will be especially true if they can make it to the top of the Pacific Division and get a higher seed. The Vegas Golden Knights (+1075) are also worth a look in a conference that could be very difficult to predict. Finally, the Edmonton Oilers (+1200) have the best player in the league in Connor McDavid, who is a game changer that gives them a chance to win every single game.
