Updated Stanley Cup Odds Suggest this Year’s Winner Hails from the Eastern Conference

The Hurricanes, Panthers, and Rangers are playing terrific hockey. All three teams won their first games. Carolina is 2-0 versus the New York Islanders.

The Hurricanes look like a solid play to win it all. Heading into the playoffs, the Panthers were a slight favorite over Carolina, but after the Hurricanes stunning 5-3 victory over the Islanders, the odds on Carolina plummeted to +460.

The Panthers beat the Lightning 3-2 in their first round game. Florida and Tampa throw down on Tuesday night in game 2. A victory by the Lightning would show softness in Florida’s odds, but a Panthers’ win would send Tampa into the Islanders and Capitals odds category.

NHL Bettors Expect Vegas or Edmonton to Lift the Western Conference Banner

The odds on the Vegas Golden Knights dropped 5 points from +1400 to +900 after the Knights vanquished Central winner Dallas 4-3. It’s going to be difficult the Stars to come back from the 1-0 deficit, which is why Dallas’ odds skyrocketed from +500 to +1200, because the Knights are in playoff mode. The defending champs are looking for a repeat.

Edmonton scored 7 goals in a masterful 7-4 game 1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings. The Oilers were on fire in every way imaginable. Edmonton, for sure, appears ready for a deep playoff run.

Stanley Cup Contenders and Dark Horses After the Start to the Playoffs

Stanley Cup Contenders

The favorite is playing excellent hockey. What makes Carolina scary is that Frederik Anderson had a bad game, he gave up 3 goals on just 12 shots, but the Hurricanes still managed a 2-goal, puck line victory.

Both Florida and the Rangers have yet to play their game 2. So we let’s wait before considering a Stanley Cup bet on either. The odds won’t change much because Carolina is playing so well.

Edmonton looks solid. The 7-3 win over the Kings was legit. If the Oilers offense continues to hum, then Edmonton will be difficult to beat for the Western Conference crown.

Vegas is on a mission. Few teams win back-to-back Stanley Cups. It’s one of the most difficult accomplishments in sports. The Knights not only beat Dallas, but they beat the Stars on the Stars’ ice. So give Vegas a big shot to complete the repeat. Right now, Vegas is the play. The odds move is significant after single game.

Stanley Cup Dark Horses

Winnipeg beat Colorado in their first game. However, the Avs scored 6 goals and the game was over Winnipeg’s ice. What that tells us is that Colorado is the likely winner in the series. Once it switches back to the Avalanche’s ice, Colorado should put a stake into Winnipeg’s heart.

Vancouver is the wild card. The Canucks looked good when dispatching of Nashville 4-2. But we can’t read too much into the victory because Vancouver beat arguably this season’s worst playoff team after the Washington Capitals.

Still, NHL handicappers have been undervaluing Vancouver all season long. So at their odds, the Canucks qualify as, for right now at least, the top dark horse on the board.

NHL: Updated Stanley Cup Odds after week 13

Previous Betting News

Another week of NHL action is in the books, and the race for the Stanley Cup continues to see teams separate themselves from the pack. Thanks to the unpredictable nature of hockey, there are still several playoff-caliber teams with high-value odds to win the title. We take a look at the teams worth keeping an eye on in the futures markets for your Betting Odds as we kick off another week of professional field hockey.

The Favorite: Boston Bruins (+520)

The Boston Bruins had an incredible week last week, taking all three games of a West coast road trip. Boston took down the Kings, Sharks, and Ducks, making statement after statement against teams from the Western Conference, especially against a Kings team that appears to be good enough to fight for the West title. As a result, Boston’s title odds came down from +600 a week ago to their current +520 price.

Given how much better Boston has been than the rest of the league so far this year, this is still a price worth jumping on for them to win the title. Getting better than +500 is going to feel like a bargain when they are one of the last teams standing in the postseason. While upsets are always possible in the NHL postseason, this team appears to be a cut above the rest early on in 2023.

The Smart Bet: New Jersey Devils (+1450)

Over the last couple of weeks, the New Jersey Devils have been treading water, sitting in second place in the Metropolitan Division. But they ended this past week with a statement win, beating the New York Rangers at home in a rivalry game in the tri-state area. Given the Rangers’ status as perennial contenders in the East over the last few years, that was no small feat from the Devils.

The question for New Jersey now is if they can round back into the form that they enjoyed early in the season in time for a playoff push. They may not have the horses to beat the aforementioned Bruins, but New Jersey looked capable of beating anyone earlier this year. At a shade under +1500, taking them now could open up some hedging opportunities in the postseason if they can raise their level once again.

The Longshot: Washington Capitals (+2600)

Last week, the Washington Capitals were at +3100 to win the Stanley Cup, and that number has only improved since. Washington sits at +2600 to lift the Cup heading into this week, and they continue to be one of the more appealing options at longer odds to win the title when all is said and done.

Washington currently sits in third place in the Metropolitan Division, behind the Devils and Hurricanes. But they have a buffer between themselves and the teams fighting for the final Wild Card spot at the moment. As long as they can avoid relinquishing that advantage, they should be able to make it into the playoffs, where their elite goal-scoring should give them a chance to beat any team they go up against.
