Season Series

Wednesday is the second of four regular-season meetings and the Bucks won the first 119-111 in Cleveland on Dec. 29. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 34 points and 16 rebounds, and Damian Lillard scored 24 of his 31 points in the second half. Antetokounmpo and Lillard each scored 14 points in the pivotal third quarter when Milwaukee outscored Cleveland 40-21 to erase a 15-point deficit and take the lead for good. Donovan Mitchell had 34 points, six rebounds and nine assists for Cleveland. The Cavaliers shot a season low 14% from 3-point range, missing 37 of 43 attempts.

Why Bet on Milwaukee Bucks?

The Bucks won their third straight game on Sunday, 143-142 in overtime on a Damian Lillard 30-plus foot three-pointer as time expired – his first-game winning bucket with his new team. With the Bucks down by two with 5.2 seconds left in overtime, Lillard inbounded the ball to Brook Lopez, immediately got it back and raced up court and pulled up from 32 feet and the ball found nothing but net. It was Lillard’s 2,500th made three-pointer of his Hall of Fame career and the Bucks’ first game winner at the buzzer since 2017.

“I knew I wasn’t going inside the three-point line,” Lillard said, noting he was just putting himself into position to find space and a good look at the rim. “It was a pretty comfortable shot.”

Lillard hit two three-pointers in overtime and hit three free throws to help the Bucks overcome an early six-point deficit in the extra session, which was forced after the Kings overcame a 12-point deficit with about eight minutes left in regulation. Lillard scored 29 points on 9-of-23 shooting, including 5 of 13 from behind the three-point line in 41 minutes. He is now a league-leading plus-58 in clutch situations this season and is second in the NBA with 92 clutch points.

Giannis Antetokounmpo accumulated 27 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals across 40 minutes. It was his fifth-triple double of the season even though Antetokounmpo carried a questionable tag into Sunday’s game due to a shoulder contusion, but he ended up playing 40 minutes. Bobby Portis had 22 points and 10 rebounds. Portis stepped up for a Milwaukee team that was without Khris Middleton for the second leg of their back-to-back set. Over his last three games, Portis holds averages of 20.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.0 three-pointers in just 22.8 minutes.

With 143 points Sunday, the Bucks have now scored at least 140 six times this season, tied for the most such games in a campaign in franchise history. They are averaging a franchise-record 125.0 ppg overall, which is second in the NBA and fifth-best ever. The Bucks are 6-0 this season when scoring at least 140 points and 20-1 when scoring at least 125.

Milwaukee will get a reinforcement on Wednesday in forward Jae Crowder. He has been sidelined since suffering a left adductor and abdominal tear Nov. 11 and undergoing surgery. In nine appearances this season, Crowder holds averages of 8.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.8 three-pointers, 1.7 assists in 26.7 minutes. He’s more of a glue guy/good defender.

Why Bet on Cleveland Cavaliers?

The Cavs (23-15) returned from a game in Paris and handled the visiting Bulls on Monday, 109-91 for a fifth straight win despite blowing a 21-point lead in the second half. Coby White made two free throws early in the fourth quarter to put Chicago in front for the only time at 81-80, capping a 28-6 run that began after Cleveland went up 74-53 in the third. The Cavaliers immediately answered with 10 straight points. Cleveland made 20 3-pointers in a franchise-record 57 attempts — an NBA season high in regulation.

Donovan Mitchell had 34 points and seven assists. Mitchell recently missed four games in late December due to an illness, but he’s been spectacular since returning to action while operating as the primary playmaker on offense with Darius Garland out. Mitchell has been averaging 29.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.0 rebounds per game since returning to the court on Dec. 29.

Mitchell is averaging career-highs this season in AST (5.8 APG), REB (5.4 RPG), STL (1.93 SPG, 2nd in the NBA) and FT% (.879 FT%) this season. He has recorded a steal in 28 of his 29 games this season and leads the East in steals per game. His 1.93 SPG is the highest steal average for a Cavalier since LeBron James in 2004-05 (2.21 SPG).

Jarrett Allen added 10 points and 14 rebounds for his ninth consecutive double-double. Allen is averaging 16.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.3 steals per game since the start of January.

The Cavs remain without two of their best players in their All-Star guard Garland and excellent young big man Evan Mobley due to injury but both are getting close. Out since Dec. 15 while recovering from a fractured jaw that prevented him from doing any kind of physical exertion, Garland took the first major step forward in his recovery Monday, when doctors removed the wiring from his mouth and gave him the green light for on-court work. Garland will gradually expected to increase the intensity of his workouts in the days to come before being cleared for game action perhaps later this week or early next.

Mobley went through a conditioning workout Monday and said he remains on track with his projected 6-to-8-week recovery timeline from arthroscopic left knee surgery. Mobley missed four consecutive games due to the left knee issue before the Cavaliers announced Dec. 15 that he was set to undergo a procedure to remove loose bodies from the knee. Now approximately four weeks removed from surgery, Mobley said that he’s experienced no setbacks in his recovery and added that his knee is feeling improved. Mobley will not return this week.

Cleveland has won 4 of its last 5 games at home against the Bucks since 2022 and is 17-6 against teams in their own Central Division over the last two seasons, including 10-2 at home. After starting the season with a 4-6 record, the Cavs have gone 19-9 since Nov. 15, which includes a current 5-game win streak. Cleveland has also won 11 of their last 14 home games (includes Paris game). Since Dec. 16, the Cavs have the best record in the NBA at 10-3.
