The NHL regular season is over, and now it is time to start thinking about the playoffs

There are some series that look to be about as lopsided as it gets, as well as some that are almost too close to call. The Panthers made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final last season and look set to make another deep run. They will face a Lightning team that went to 3 straight Stanley Cup Finals, but who also look like a bit of a shadow of that crew. The Panthers took 2 of 3 in the regular season series.

Boston Bruins Vs Toronto Maple Leafs

This might well be the pick of the opening round, with a pair of Original 6 teams going at it. It also might be one of the toughest to predict. The Bruins swept all 4 games in the regular season, but I think this will be a tougher ask.

New York Rangers Vs Washington Capitals

The Rangers win the Metropolitan Division this season, picking up 15 more wins than the Capitals, who play in the same division. These teams split their regular season series, but I still think the Rangers have the edge.

Carolina Hurricanes Vs New York Islanders

I am not totally sold on my pick to win it all this year, but I do have the Carolina Hurricanes in the conversation. Again, this regular season series ended in a split, but the playoffs are a whole different entity. I think the Hurricanes take it.

I think the West is going to be a little tougher to predict, and it all begins with a great matchup. The defending champions Knights had to settle for the Wild Card and a tough Round 1 draw, but they have a ton of playoff experience. I’m taking the upset.

Winnipeg Jets Vs Colorado Avalanche

You can’t always look at the regular season series and automatically predict a winner in the playoff, but this one is rather convincing. The Jets beat the Avs in all 3 regular season meetings, outscoring them 17-4 in the process. That’s tough to ignore.

Vancouver Canucks at Nashville Predators

For me, this is the toughest of the Round 1 Western Conference playoff series to predict. Yes, the Canucks won all 3 meetings with Nashville in the regular season, but it still feels like these two are well matched. I see a close series.

Edmonton Oilers Vs LA Kings

While the Oilers took 3 of 4 from the Kings in the regular season, the games were, for the most part, low on offense. I expect all the games in this series to be tight, but the Oilers have better firepower to draw upon when needed.
