Sleeper Teams Poised to Break into the 2020 NFL Playoffs

Written by on September 2, 2020

Once the craziness of the NFL draft and free agency has passed and the schedule has been released, the bookies go to work in setting the odds for each team for the coming season. As fans and bettors, it’s great to analyze each team, check the odds, and see where some value plays might emerge. We all have an idea as to which teams might be in a position to dominate and make a run at the Super Bowl, but there are also going to be a couple of teams who emerge from the middle of the pack and surprise us all. This time last year, how many of you picked the Tennessee Titans to go to the AFC Championship Game? Those are the types of teams we are talking about here. With that in mind, who could be the sleeper team to watch this season? Let’s get right into action so you can start planning ahead your bets against their NFL Playoffs odds.

Possible Teams That Can Surprise & Make It All The Way In The 2020 NFL Playoffs

Arizona Cardinals

Step one in getting back to being able to compete with the best is landing a QB that could be the man for many years to come. While Kyler Murray had some definite rookie moments in his first season in the league, he got better and better with each passing week. The Cardinals appear to be going all in on getting him some weapons, as they went out and landed WR DeAndre Hopkins from the Houston Texans. They have a few drafts players from the last couple of seasons who could also make an impact this season. They are in a tough division, but the Cardinals are one to watch.

Pittsburgh Steelers

While it might seem ridiculous to have the Steelers in as a sleeper pick, there are a few reasons why they are in this spot. They have missed the Playoffs in back to back seasons and now look to be well off the pace being set by the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North. Their 8-8 record last season looks grim until you dig a little deeper and see that they were hammered by injuries on the offensive side of the football. If Big Ben can return from a season ending injury and play well and the defense did what it did last season, the Steelers might just be a great pick.

New York Giants

Just to be clear here, this article is not necessarily about teams that might emerge as a dark horse to win the Super Bowl. Rather, it is about teams that could be a whole lot better than their odds suggest. With a 4-12 season in 2019, the Giants proved that they still have a lot of work to do in their rebuilding efforts, but they made some great strides this offseason. They have some great pieces on offense, but they also worked on bolstering their defense over the past few months. Might this team find a way to get into the Wild Card picture?

LA Chargers

The Chargers actually have one of the more talented rosters in the league, and while we mean no disrespect to Phillip Rivers, they have been in need of a QB for a couple of seasons now. They now have a pair of potential starters in the fold, and it will be the play of whomever gets the call that will dictate how far this goes. Tyrod Taylor is a good, if unspectacular, veteran QB who tends to manage the game well and steer clear of turnovers. Justin Herbert, the #6 overall pick, is raw, but he has a ton of upside. If either of these guys gets hot, look for the Chargers to nab a Wild Card spot.
