No team in the NFL drafts or trades for a QB believing that they are going to be a total bust. There is a reason why there are only a handful of elite QBs plying their trade in the league at the moment, which is because there is no tougher position to play. Playing at a high level for a long period of time is ridiculously tough, and only a few QBs have been able to pull it off. In Jared Goff, the Rams believed they had drafted their franchise QB, but as is the case in so many relationships, things tend to take a turn that leads to both sides believing they would be better off apart. Goff and the Rams made that split this offseason, with LA shipping Goff to Detroit in exchange for Matthew Stafford, a QB who almost certainly deserves to be given elite status. The question now, though, is can Stafford take this Rams offense to the next level this coming season? Let’s try to find that out so you can continue to plan your bets against their NFL odds.
NFL Betting: LA Rams Offense Expert Analysis for the 2021-22 Season
The Rams Offense in 2020
The bar was not set particularly high for the Rams in 2020, but they proved to be a very pleasant surprise in a tough NFC West division. They closed the regular season with a 10-6 record and a trip to the playoffs, where they won the Wild Card game before getting steamrolled by the Green Bay Packers in the Divisional Round. As good as the season was for the Rams, the front office felt that they needed a new QB to steer the ship, hence the trade.
You look at the Rams offensive stats in 2020 and you don’t really see a unit that should have been near the playoffs. They were down near the middle of the pack in total YPG, as well as in total passing and rushing yards. This is a team that thrived due to a stellar defensive group, so you can see why they decided to try and raise the level of the offense in the offseason.
The addition of Matthew Stafford basically elevates the offense before a down is played, but can he be the transformative figure that turns this team into a championship contender?
The Rams Offensive Outlook in 2021
We can talk about how good Stafford has been throughout his career until we are blue in the face, but his success is wholly dependent on the offensive line protecting him. Given time, Stafford will put up gaudy numbers, but if he gets hit, there could be an issue. One of the biggest problems that Stafford has had from day one is injuries, although he did not get a ton of protection in Detroit.
One thing that could help Stafford is the play of RB Cam Akers. He had a solid rookie year, tallying 625 yards in 13 games in the regular season, as well as 221 more in the playoffs. The general consensus is that he is ready for a breakout season that could see him top the 1,000-yard mark.
Stafford also has some legitimate weapons to throw to, with Cooper Kupp, DeSean Jackson, and Robert Woods all very good wide receivers. We should also mention Tyler Higbee at TE, as he might be the one that benefits the most from the addition of Stafford.
The Rams coaching staff have been talking up Stafford in a big way this offseason. If he stays healthy, watch out for the Rams.
