Another NFL Week is in the books and while some teams remain contenders others have proven they’re pretenders. Chiefs continue odds slide and Saints become true contenders
Another week means another +25 in odds depreciation for the defending Super Bowl champs. The Kansas City Chiefs started Week 12 a +275 chalk to win their second straight championship. They’ll play Week 13 as even bigger favorites.
Kansas City went into Tampa Bay and beat the Buccaneers 27-24. In doing so, KC won their sixth straight and showed that their much maligned defense could hang with a top offense. But the win, although impressive, doesn’t justify the odds change.
Sure, Kansas City beat Tom Brady, but the Chiefs almost blew a 20-7 halftime lead. When we back NFL teams to win the Super Bowl at low a price like what the Chiefs offer, we must expect the team we like to dominate in every way.
Kansas City didn’t and that could be a problem once the playoffs start. That doesn’t mean that KC is a pretender to win the Super Bowl. Far from it. It does, though, mean we should take our time before dumping on Patrick Mahomes and Co. to take their second straight title at underlay odds.
The New Orleans Saints offer much better odds than the Kansas City Chiefs. The Saints also appear to be on the rise after winning their eighth straight game and second with Taysom Hill under center. A closer look reveals that’s not the case.
First, the Saints got a pass because Denver had to play a wide receiver at quarterback. That’s a big knock. The second is that Hill played like a rookie a week after lighting up the Atlanta Falcons. Versus a good but not great defense, Taysom completed 9-of-16 for 78 yards and an interception.
The saving grace for New Orleans? The defense has come together well. The Saints haven’t allowed more than one touchdown in three straight games. Still, if we must be honest about KC, we must be honest about N’awlins. The Big Easy’s odds imply they’re a lock to win homefield and bounce the Packers and Seahawks. It’s hard to know why any Super Bowl future bettor is sure that will happen.
Buccaneers and Raiders fall to pretender status, Titans become top Super Bowl underdog
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers haven’t fallen to pretender status because the Kansas City Chiefs beat them. Tampa has fallen to contender status because they’ve lost 3-of-4.
Granted the losses were to three good teams, the Saints, Rams and Chiefs. But all three losses happened at home. Two of the losses, to the Saints and Rams, were in games where odds makers favored the Bucs.
Also, Tampa’s defense appears to have slipped. The Bucs allowed the Saints to score 38, the Panthers to drop 23, and the Rams and Chiefs to each score 27. Now 7-5, Tampa could go from possibly winning the NFC South to not even making the playoffs.
The Las Vegas Raiders probably won’t make the playoffs. Just when we thought the Raiders might have turned the corner, they lay the biggest egg of the year. Atlanta beat Las Vegas 43-6. The Raiders didn’t even try, which means their season is all but over.
The one team that pushed their way into the contender category are the 8-3 Tennessee Titans. The Titans started the season undefeated but after losing 3-of-4 in the middle of the season, Tennessee has bounced back with two straight.
Both were road wins against quality teams, the Baltimore Ravens and the Indianapolis Colts. Titans’ running back Derrick Henry evens the playing field versus every defense in the league. He’s that good. If you agree and can back the Titans at decent odds, consider doing so.
