AFC Rivalry Games : Must Bet Games in the NFL Calendar

What makes the NFL fun is how trends shift over time. The last few years have seen several non-traditional teams surge to the top of the AFC, thanks to the young quarterbacks they drafted. While there are still plenty of old-school rivalries left, the new ones have provided plenty of excitement.

2023 NFL Kickoff Game: September 7, 2023

 

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills

When: Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 4:25 pm ET | Week 14
Where: Arrowhead Stadium | Kansas City, Missouri

The Chiefs have plenty of traditional rivalries in the AFC West Division, but their matchups with the Bills have been the highlight of the playoffs over the past few seasons. Kansas City, led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has knocked Buffalo out of the playoffs twice during the past five years.

Last season, the Bills and Chiefs played an exciting regular season game where Buffalo won. However, Buffalo never got a chance for a rematch, as they were tripped up by the Cincinnati Bengals in the Divisional Round.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Kansas City Chiefs

When: Sunday, December 31, 2023 at 4:25 pm ET | NFL Week 17
Where: Paycor Stadium | Cincinnati, Ohio

The Bengals have tried to rebuild many times over the past 40 years. Cincinnati seemed to have solved all its problems since drafting Joe Burrow three years ago. After having a tough time during his rookie year, the Bengals reached the Super Bowl two years ago and lost in the AFC Championship game to Kansas City last season.

The Bengals, surprisingly, built a roster that could hang with the dynastic Chiefs. Burrow has a 3-1 record against the Chiefs when Mahomes starts at quarterback. The two team’s meetings in the AFC championship the past two seasons have been classics.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens

When: Sunday, October 8, 2023 at 1:00 pm ET | Week 5
Where: Acrisure Stadium | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
TV / Streaming: CBS

This is a rivalry game between two teams that are clinging for relevance. While the two AFC North rivals haven’t entirely bottomed out, the Ravens and Steelers haven’t played a major role in who was going to the Super Bowl over the past few seasons. Baltimore has superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson and worked out a new deal with him, but his durability and passing ability are in question.

The Steelers drafted Kenny Pickett as quarterback last season and have a new general manager, but they need to prove they can build a modern offense. Three yards and a cloud of dust-style football don’t pay anymore. With the Bengals as the division favorites, both meetings between the Steelers and Ravens should be intense.

New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins

When: Sunday, December 17, 2023 at 1:00 pm ET | Week 15

The Jets made a major splash in the offseason by trading for veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Now, New York has to figure out if it can build around its young core. Rodgers should help stabilize their offense and take the Jets from being a borderline playoff contender to a legit challenger.

The Dolphins took a big step forward last season and may have been able to make a playoff run if quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was healthy. Miami was able to split with Buffalo last season, so the Jets may need to find a way to topple the Dolphins to make the playoffs.
