NFL Betting News: What you Should Know Before the Calendar Comes Out

The full NFL schedule will be released on Thursday night for the 2023 regular season, but a few games involving the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs have leaked already – but not yet which team they will host in the Kickoff Game. We know it will not be Cincinnati or Miami as the Chiefs will host the Bengals in the AFC title game rematch on New Year’s Eve with KC opening as 3.5-point favorite and will also “host” Miami on Nov. 5 in Frankfurt, Germany.

Kansas City was upset at home in the AFC Championship Game following the 2021 season by Cincinnati, 27-24 in overtime. The Bengals won in KC last regular season as well, 27-24, as Joe Burrow improved to 3-0 in his career against Patrick Mahomes. However, the Chiefs got the last laugh with a 23-20 win over the Bengals again at Arrowhead Stadium in the AFC title game.

Mahomes was playing on an injured ankle but managed to scramble in the final seconds and was tackled out of bounds by Joseph Ossai to send Mahomes sprawling into the bench. The run itself wasn’t enough to put the Chiefs in field-goal range but the ensuing 15-yard penalty on Ossai was and Harrison Butker hit the winning 45-yarder with three seconds left.

Ahead of that series, Kansas City’s defense held against the Bengals, got a crucial sack from Chris Jones to force a punt with 39 seconds left, and shaky return man Skyy Moore broke free for 29 yards on the return. That gave Mahomes and the offense one more try.

Mahomes threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns, even though he was missing three of his wide receivers to injuries by the end. Burrow, who was sacked five times and wobbly by the end, finished with 270 yards passing to go with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Bengals.

The Chiefs would go on to upset Philadelphia 38-35 in the Super Bowl for their second title under Mahomes. There are reports that Kansas City will host the Eagles in Week 2. That hasn’t been confirmed by the NFL but was leaked on social media by Donna Kelce, mother of Chiefs Pro Bowl tight end Travis Kelce and Eagles Pro Bowl center Jason Kelce. If that game is Week 2, it probably will be Sunday night as MLB’s Royals play a home game at 2:10 EST on that Sunday (direct parking conflict), and Arrowhead Stadium is hosting a Beyoncé concert the night of Monday, Sept. 18.

It was first believed that the Eagles would host the Chicago Bears in Frankfurt, Germany, but apparently the Chiefs pushed the NFL to keep that game in Kansas City and instead the champs will host the Dolphins on Nov. 5 in Frankfurt with KC a 5.5.-point favorite. The teams didn’t play last season. It will be the first game that former Kansas City wideout All-Pro Tyreek Hill will play against his former team. He was traded to Miami last offseason.

“We are thrilled to be headed to Frankfurt this fall to play the Dolphins,” Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a statement. “The Chiefs have a long history of helping to grow the game of football around the world, and we have been eagerly anticipating our chance to play in Germany. Ever since the Chiefs were awarded International Home Marketing Rights for Germany, we have engaged with fans and partners throughout the DACH region, and we can feel the enthusiasm for NFL football. We look forward to bringing Chiefs Kingdom to Germany and to sharing the game with our fans in Europe.”

It will be the third regular-season international game in Chiefs’ franchise history. The team previously played the Detroit Lions at London’s Wembley Stadium in November 2015 and the Los Angeles Chargers at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca in November 2019. KC won both.

Mahomes and Travis Kelce have two of the top 10 selling NFL jerseys in Germany. The league also announced the other four International Series games (below). There are no games scheduled in Mexico for the 2023 regular season due to stadium renovations. Jacksonville will be the first team to play two games in London in the same season.
