Pacers vs Cavaliers Season Series

Indiana won the first two meetings vs. the Cavs early in the season but Cleveland won the most recent matchup 108-103 in Indianapolis on March 18. Cleveland led by as many as nine in the final quarter before Indiana pulled even with 2:05 remaining. Caris LeVert drove baseline and then pulled up and swished a 9-foot fadeaway jumper to regain the lead. The Pacers didn’t score again. LeVert and Jarrett Allen led the Cavs with 23 points each. They played without three other starters, including All-Star Donovan Mitchell. Pascal Siakam led the Pacers with 19 points and 12 rebounds. All-Star Tyrese Haliburton had 14 points and 12 assists. The Cavs have won eight of the past 11 in the series overall.

Why Bet on Indiana Pacers?

The Pacers (46-34) currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference but could slip to seventh and the play-in tournament or potentially climb to fifth. This is their final road game of the regular season. Indiana won its third in a row Tuesday, 140-123 at short-handed Toronto. The Pacers overcame a 12-point deficit and led 65-64 at halftime. Indiana opened the third quarter with a 21-9 run for a 106-91 advantage and the game was over.

The Pacers have now reached 140 or more points 10 times this season, which is tied for the most in one season in NBA history (Denver, 10 times in 1981-82). The Pacers trailed by as many as 12 points in the first quarter, and have now won 15 games this season after trailing by 10 or more points. The Pacers’ 52 games with 120 or more points is tied for the fourth-most in NBA history, and marks the most since the Denver Nuggets posted a record 63 such games in 1981-82.

All-Star Tyrese Haliburton had 30 points, five assists and five rebounds. Haliburton led both teams in scoring Tuesday, and it marked the first time since Jan. 3 against the Bucks that he’s reached at least 30 points. He has struggled with his shot in the second half of the season, shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from three on 7.5 attempts per game since the All-Star break.

Obi Toppin dropped 23 points and six rebounds in one of his best games of the season. Toppin hadn’t scored 20 or more points since Jan. 26 when he finished with 23 against Phoenix. In that 33-game span, Toppin has averaged just 8.4 points across 18.4 minutes off the bench. TJ McConnell had 17 points and seven assists in 21 minutes off the bench. McConnell scored in double digits for the third straight game and has reached that mark in 13 of his last 14 games. Since March 1, McConnell is averaging 14.0 points on 57.4 percent shooting along with 5.1 assists. He might be the best backup point guard in the NBA.

The Pacers have seven players who are averaging 10 or more points per game and have received key contributions off the bench from several players all season. The Pacers are 38-14 when six or more players score in double figures. Toppin ranks second in field goal percentage off the bench as he is shooting 57.2 percent this season. Toppin has reached double figures in scoring 18 times off the bench. McConnell leads all bench players with 5.5 assists per game and 10th overall in the NBA with an assists-per-turnover ratio of 3.81.

The Pacers have led the NBA in field goal percentage for nearly the entirety of this season. Their current percentage of .468 would mark the highest field goal percentage in team history and the NBA’s highest since 1991-92 (Chicago, .508).

Why Bet on Cleveland Cavaliers?

The Cavs (47-33) sit fourth in the East but could get to third or slip into the play-in tournament although that’s very unlikely. They snapped a three-game skid Wednesday with a 110-98 win over short-handed Memphis t to move within a victory of wrapping up a playoff spot. Cleveland would lock up a top-six finish and its second straight playoff appearance with a victory Friday or a win Sunday over Charlotte. It also clinches if Philadelphia loses one of its two remaining games.

“It’s a great opportunity to control our destiny with all of these games at home,” Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “If we take care of what’s in front of us, we’ll be fine.”

Wednesday was the 14th time this season that the Cavaliers have held their opponent under 100 points (14-0). Cleveland shot 15-for-37 from three-point range and set a franchise record for three-pointers made in a single season (1,068 3FGM) surpassing their previous single season record with 1,067 3FGM in 2016-17.

Donovan Mitchell led the way Wednesday with 29 points, eight assists and four rebounds after missing Sunday’s game against the Clippers due to left knee injury management. He led Cleveland in scoring and hit five three-point shots for the first time since Feb. 7 against the Wizards. Mitchell is on pace to become just the 2nd player in team history to have two or more seasons averaging 26.0+ PPG (LeBron James – 8 times).

“It was time to get going and I felt really good,” said Mitchell, who also broke his nose in mid-March. “The biggest cure for my knee is rest, but we don’t have time for that, so we have to find ways to adapt. I wanted to set the tone here.”

Jarrett Allen had 16 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and three blocks for his 41st double-double of the season on Friday, nine more than his total during the 2022-23 campaign. Those 41 double-doubles are the most by a Cavalier in a season since LeBron James (52) in 2017-18. Allen is also averaging career-highs this season in points per game (16.4 PPG) and assists per game (2.7 APG).

Fellow big man Evan Mobley had 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. It was Mobley’s 22nd double-double of the season and his second one since returning from a nine-game absence due to a left ankle sprain. He is averaging career-highs this season in rebounds (9.5 RPG), assists (3.2 APG), steals (0.94 SPG) and three-point percentage (.386 3FG%).

As for Friday, Cleveland is 10-5 this season against teams in their own Central Division and 23-8 over divisional opponents in the last two seasons. The Cavs are ranked No. 7 in the NBA in defensive rating (111.9) and Top 10 in opponent PPG (7th, 110.0) and opponent FG% (6th, .462). They have won 22 of their past 30 at home.

Cavaliers vs Pacers Season Series

It’s the third of four regular-season meetings between the clubs with Indiana leading 2-0. They last played way back on Nov. 3 in Indianapolis and the Pacers prevailed 121-116. Myles Turner scored 27 points and Tyrese Haliburton had 18 points and 13 assists. Donavan Mitchell had 38 points, nine assists and five rebounds for Cleveland. The Cavaliers overcame an 18-point deficit to lead by four in the fourth quarter. Each team shot 52% from the field, but Indiana went 15 of 31 on 3-pointers while limiting the Cavs to 8 of 28. Former Pacer Caris LeVert, who had 13 points, missed a 3 from the left wing that would have tied it with 10 seconds left.

Why Bet on Cleveland Cavaliers?

The Cavs are 1-1 on a three-game trip after a 117-103 loss in Houston on Saturday. The Rockets made 15 3-pointers and outscored Cleveland 56-46 in the paint. Houston led 70-54 at halftime and entered the fourth quarter with a 25-point lead.

“Early in the ballgame, you could see we were getting outworked and out-scrapped,” Cavs coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “For us, the defense sets our tone and when we don’t do that, we don’t give yourself a chance to win.” Bickerstaff is one victory shy of his 250th career win as an NBA head coach.

Darius Garland struggled with only 12 points and four assists. He missed five of his six three-point attempts and his streak of five assists or more in a game ended at seven. Over his last five games, though, Garland has averaged 23.4 points on 51.9 percent shooting (including 45.2 percent from three on 8.4 attempts) and 6.6 assists per game.

Caris LeVert had 21 points and seven assists off the bench. It was his first 20-point game since Jan. 11 against the Nets and the first time he has shot 50 percent or better since Feb. 27 against the Mavericks. LeVert is averaging 5.1 assists per game this season, but he has upped that to 8.3 assists per game over his last 10 appearances. LeVert has the second-most 20-point games off the bench among all East reserves and leads all NBA reserves with 12 games of at least 10 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Donovan Mitchell also struggled Saturday with 13 points but is averaging career-highs this season in rebounds (5.3 RPG), assists (6.1 APG), steals (1.76 SPG, 4th in the NBA) and blocks (0.51 BPG). He also ranks 6th in the NBA in points (27.4 PPG) and he is on pace to become the 2nd player in Cavaliers history to record at least two straight seasons averaging 27.0+ PPG (LeBron James, 6-straight seasons from 2004-2010).

The Cavs are 7-3 in their last 10 games against the Pacers since Jan. 2, 2022 and are 20-6 against teams in their own Central Division since Dec. 27, 2022. The Cavaliers are 20-12 (.600) on the road this season, marking the 3rd-best road winning percentage in the NBA.

After starting the season with a 4-6 record, the Cavs have gone 38-19 since Nov. 15, which includes win streaks of 9 games (Jan. 26-Feb. 10) and 8 games (Jan. 3-22). The Cavs have made 508 three-pointers since Jan. 3, the second most in the league.

Why Bet on Indiana Pacers?

The Pacers are off a 121-100 win over Brooklyn on Monday, their third win in four games. The Nets shot 43% from the field, committed 21 turnovers and fell to 1-4 on their six-game road trip. Indiana trailed 30-25 at the end of the first quarter and led just 59-57 at halftime before blowing the game open in the second half, leading by 27 in the fourth quarter. The victory was the Pacers’ seventh of the season by a margin of at least 20 points.

“Get 82 points in the paint, 17 offensive rebounds and 21 turnovers, that’s tough to beat a team like that,” Brooklyn interim coach Kevin Ollie said. “We can’t have 21 turnovers. Got to protect your paint. We got to keep people in front of us.”

Pascal Siakam had 28 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Siakam has found his role in the Pacers’ offensive scheme and has been playing well of late, averaging 19.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game since the beginning of March. Tyresse Haliburton had 14 points and seven rebounds but only four assists. Since the All-Star break, he’s shooting just 22.4 percent from deep.

Haliburton leads the NBA with an average of 11.7 assists this season. That mark would be the most in a season since John Stockton in 1991-92 (13.7). Haliburton has recorded double-doubles in 39 games. He has 11 games with at least 15 assists, the most in a season in franchise history and most by any player since Russell Westbrook in 2020-21 (14).

Aaron Nesmith accumulated 16 points. He has scored in double digits in four straight appearances and has averaged 10.9 points since the beginning of March. Nesmith ranks third in the NBA in 3-point percentage while shooting a career-best 44.5 percent. Backup point guard T.J. McConnell has scored in double figures in five of his last seven games and 10 of his last 17 overall. McConnell now leads all bench players in the NBA in assists with 5.4 per game.

The Pacers lead the NBA in scoring this season with an average of 123.1 points this season. The Pacers have reached 140 or more points eight times (8-0 record) – which is the most in franchise history – 130 or more points 20 times (18-2) and 120 or more 45 times (34-11) through 68 games. The Pacers have shot 60 percent or better from the field seven times this season, most in franchise history. They have won 10 games this season after trailing by 10 or more points.
