Why Bet on Chicago?

The Bulls come off a 112-105 upset win at Indiana on Monday. There were 35 ties and lead changes in the game and 11 in the fourth quarter until the Bulls gained some control in the last two minutes. Nikola Vucevic had 24 points on 10-for-19 shooting along with 17 rebounds and three assists in his best game of the early season and his second double-double.

“We were more patient reading what they were doing defensively, attacking certain matchups and attacking the paint,” said Vucevic. “We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well, but we stuck with it and kept attacking. Now are we going to do it consistently enough?”

Zach LaVine struggled with his shot (6-for-17) but finished with 23 points and five rebounds. Aside from his 51-point outburst over the weekend, LaVine has been rather disappointing to start the season. DeMar DeRozan chipped in 20 points and four assists. The veteran has scored at least 20 points in his four outings this season while attempting 18.5 shots per game. DeRozan is averaging 25.6 ppg, 7.6 apg and 5.0 rpg in his last five games against the Mavericks.

Monday marked the first time this season that LaVine, DeRozan and Vucevic all scored at least 20 points. The Bulls are 17-9 when all three do so all-time. Former first-round pick Patrick Williams registered a season-high nine points along with four rebounds Monday. Williams is attempting just 6.0 shots per game while failing to make an impact on the glass (3.3 rebounds per game).

Chicago currently stands as one of the best teams in the NBA on the offensive glass. The Bulls rank tied for fourth in the league in total second chance points (71) and in second chance points per game (17.8), while sitting fifth in total offensive rebounds (50). A season ago, Chicago was 28th in offensive boards (694) and 30th in second chance points (868), turning the tide in 2023-24.

Why Bet on Dallas?

The Mavs improved to 3-0 with a 125-110 win at Memphis on Monday playing without Kyrie Irving due to a left foot sprain. He’s day-to-day. Irving is averaging 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 6.0 assists while shooting 39.0 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from beyond the arc. The win pushed the Mavericks to 3-0, the first time since 2004-05 that they have won their first three games of the season. They had 23 three-pointers on 47 attempts.

MVP favorite Luka Doncic had 35 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists Monday. He has made at least half of his field-goal attempts in all three of Dallas’ contests and has shot 48.6 percent (18-for-37) from three-point range. Overall, he’s averaging 39.0 points, 11.7 boards and 9.7 assists while 55.6 percent from the field and 70.4 percent from the charity stripe thus far. Doncic has 58 triple-doubles in his career and is 1 away from tying Larry Bird for 9th on the NBA’s all-time list.

“Luka magic. You know, just a triple-double,” coach Jason Kidd said. “I enjoy those turnovers that he is trying to throw the ball ahead. Sometimes, the quarterback gets picked off and gets an incomplete. But he has receivers running. When you get those easy baskets or you get in the scouting report that we’re going to run, it just makes the game so much easier where he doesn’t have to fight for 40 minutes.”

Doncic is averaging 25.3 points, 9.8 rebounds and 10.2 assists in his last eight games against Chicago overall, after he averaged just 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in his first two career games against the franchise.

New Maverick Grant Williams had his best overall game of the young season Monday with 15 points and when he was clocked by Jaren Jackson Jr. with 1:45 left in the third quarter, it was ruled a flagrant-1 foul and was a big part of what became a four-point possession when Tim Hardaway Jr. (21 points) hit a pair of free throws after Williams did so. That put the Mavericks up 95-84 and they didn’t look back. Derrick Jones amassed 22 points on Monday. Jones has started each of the Mavericks’ three games this season, but he totaled only five points over 25 minutes during the team’s first two contests.

With an 85.7-percent field goal percentage, rookie Dereck Lively is tied for the lead in the NBA in field goal percentage (min. 10 FGA) after converting 12-of-14 field goals through three games. Amongst all rookies, Lively ranks ninth in total points scored with 27 points and is tied fourth in total rebounds with 12 rebounds. Including a five offensive rebound outing in the season opener, Lively is ranked second amongst rookies in offensive rebounding (Ausar Thompson).
