Season Series

New York opened the season at home vs. Boston and lost 108-104. Kristaps Porzingis made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:29 left and scored 30 points in a strong Celtics debut. Porzingis finished with eight rebounds and four blocked shots against his original NBA club and also set a record for highest-scoring Celtics debut. Jayson Tatum added 34 points and 11 rebounds. RJ Barrett and Immanuel Quickley each scored 24 points for the Knicks, who started slowly but opened the fourth quarter with a 13-2 run to take their first lead of the game. They couldn’t hold on. “I thought the start of the game hurt us and then I thought the second, third and fourth we played better,” Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said.

Why Bet on New York?

The Knicks play the second of a back-to-back after crushing visiting Charlotte on Sunday, 129-107. The Knicks shot a season-high 54% from the field to win their third straight game. Julius Randle had 23 points (8-of-16 FGs), five rebounds, five assists and three steals. For just the second time this season, Randle didn’t record a double-double. The other game was a 6/6/4 line against Cleveland. Sunday was the first time that he made at least half of his field goal attempts this season, which is an encouraging sign for him, since he is shooting 33.6% from the floor this year.

“We’re playing better basketball,” Randle said. “It’s still super-early in the season, so we’ve got to keep building to where we want to be at.”

RJ Barrett led the Knicks with 24 points (9-of-16 FGs) to go with four rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. Since returning from a two-game absence, Barrett has scored 74 points on 26-of-49 shooting. Jalen Brunson had 20 points but only played 27 minutes because of how lopsided the score was. He did the majority of his scoring early by shooting 5-for-7 in the first quarter and putting up 13 points in the period. This was just his third game this season shooting better than 50%, and he was able to score over 20 points for the second consecutive outing.

The blowout reached the point where Coach Tom Thibodeau rested most of his starters for the entire fourth quarter, a luxury the coach rarely utilizes because, he said, “no lead is safe.” The lead was never in jeopardy in the second half against the Hornets (3-6), who were missing several players and lost prized rookie Brandon Miller to an ankle sprain in the second quarter. On the completed homestand, New York beat the Hornets, Spurs and Clippers by at least 14 points each.

“[MSG] is obviously a historic and great place to play so when teams come here they want to play well,” Brunson said. “So I think for us we’ve just got to turn up a little bit, have that same focus we do on the road.”

The Knicks are leading the league in rebounds per game (50.0), offensive rebounds per game (15.0), ranked seventh in defensive rebounds per game (35.0), and first in total boards per game (400). Mitchell Robinson currently leads the league in offensive rebounds. The Knicks have been off to a strong start on the defensive end as well. They are currently ranked first in the NBA in opponents second chance points (9.0), second in defensive rating (103.7), and fourth in opponents points in the paint (42.9). In addition, the Knicks are ranked first in the Eastern Conference in opponents points per game (102.8).

Thibodeau has earned 130 wins as the head coach of the Knicks, which ranks sixth all time in franchise history. He is also 13 wins away from becoming the fifth winningest head coach in team history, which would pass Hall of Famer, Hubie Brown (142 wins).

Why Bet on Boston?

Boston routed visiting Toronto 117-194 on Saturday for its second win in a row. Jayson Tatum totaled 27 points (10-18 FG, 3-9 3Pt, 4-6 FT), five rebounds, four assists and one block. Tatum couldn’t extend his double-double streak to three games, but has eclipsed the 25-point mark in six of his first nine outings while averaging 27.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists per contest.

Jaylen Brown led the team with 29 points. Brown finished as Boston’s leading scorer for the second straight game, leading the Celtics to a pair of comfortable victories on back-to-back nights. Brown’s last two games have been strong, but overall, his scoring, rebounds, assists and efficiency are all down significantly from last season. Kristaps Porzingis produced 21 points and seven boards. Porzingis has adjusted to his new surroundings in Boston, and while he’s operating as the third-best offensive option behind Tatum and Brown. The veteran big man hasn’t been able to replicate his 30-point performance from the season opener, but he has scored at least 20 points in four of his last five outings.

Sam Hauser finished Saturday’s win over Toronto with 12 points, four boards and four three-pointers across 18 minutes. Hauser provided a spark off the bench once again as he delivered his fourth straight game with at least 11 points and three triples. Over his last four outings, Hauser has averaged 12.8 points and 3.5 three-pointers while shooting a blistering 15-of-30 from beyond the arc. He’s averaging nearly 20 minutes per game this season.

Jrue Holiday recorded his third double-double this season as he finished with 13 points (6-14 FG), a season-high 12 rebounds, nine assists, and two steals. Holiday has already posted a single-season career-high with three double-digit rebound games with the Celtics and is averaging a career-best 7.9 rebounds per game, which ranks second the team behind Tatum (9.8). Derrick White returned to the court after missing two games for the first time in nearly two years (January 7-14, 2022), and he finished with 19 points (6-18 FG, 4-4 FT), four rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a block.

Boston’s 76.2 percent clip from inside the arc on Saturday was the third-best mark in franchise history. The record 81.1 percent, also came against Toronto last season (4/7/23).

The Celtics are 162-68 all-time at home vs. the Knicks but have lost the past two there.
