Season Series

It’s the second of four regular-season meetings. On Nov. 1 also in Miami, the Nets won 109-105 in an upset. Relative unknown Armoni Brooks scored 17 points off the bench in 16 minutes, Mikal Bridges led Brooklyn with 21 points and the Nets erased a 15-point second-half deficit. The Nets outscored Miami 55-25 when Brooks was on the floor, 36-16 in his two second-half stints. He was 6 of 7 from the floor, 5 of 6 from 3-point range. Tyler Herro scored 30 points for Miami. He’s now out injured. The Heat are 78-59 all-time versus the Nets during the regular season, including 42-26 in home games. But Brooklyn has won five in a row overall in the series.

Why Bet on Brooklyn?

Despite playing without injured starters Ben Simmons and Cam Thomas, the Nets rallied for a 124-104 home win over Orlando on Tuesday. Spencer Dinwiddie led the Nets with 29 points to go with nine assists and five rebounds. Dinwiddie’s numbers are down across the board this season, but he set a season high in points. Day’Ron Sharpe recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Starting center Nic Claxton found himself in foul trouble early and often in this game, which limited him to just 21 minutes. Sharpe usually won’t see anywhere near 24 minutes that he did.

Thomas has been out since Nov. 8 with an ankle injury when he stepped on PJ Tucker’s foot during Brooklyn’s win over the Clippers. He was averaging 26.9 points per game: “I’m supposed to be reevaluated very soon. So, I’m just gonna take it from there. But feeling better, getting better. So that’s the only thing I’m looking forward to, just trying to help me get back to help the team the best way I can.”

The oft-injured Simmons is going to be out for more than another week with a nerve impingement in his lower back. Tuesday’s game was the fourth contest in a row Simmons has missed since the issue cropped up during Brooklyn’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Nov. 6. Simmons is no stranger to back issues. They have been consistent for the past two years. Through six games, Simmons averaged 6.5 points, 10.8 rebounds and 6.7 assists a game on 52.8% shooting. He has not taken a 3-pointer all season and in 191 minutes across four games has gotten to the free throw line four times. The Nets have been outscored by 9.6 points per 100 possessions.

Lonnie Walker IV has gotten more run with Simmons out and is second in scoring among all players averaging fewer than 25.0 mpg this season. Walker IV (15.0 ppg) is fifth in the league in bench ppg (min. five games off the bench), trailing only Malcolm Brogdon (18.2 ppg), Tim Hardaway Jr. (17.5 ppg), Caris LeVert (17.5 ppg) and Alec Burks (15.3 ppg). He’s also second in total points scored off the bench (150) and is tied for fourth in plus/minus among reserves this season (+51).

Star Mikal Bridges is sixth in the league in fourth quarter points scored (78), while shooting .500 FG, .412 3FG and .840 FT in the fourth quarter. Bridges is sixth in the league in total miles traveled this season (29.0). He led the category in each of the last two seasons. He’s fourth in points scored in ‘clutch’ time (27 – .571 FG%), trailing Stephen Curry (32), Damian Lillard (32) and LeBron James (29).

Regarding this game, the Nets’ active five-game win streak against the Heat matches their longest-ever win streak vs. Miami and is the longest active win streak for any team vs. Miami. The Nets are the first Eastern Conference team to win five straight games against the Heat since Boston (1/21/19 – 1/28/20). Brooklyn has won 20 of its 22 games vs. Southeast Division teams since the start of last season, marking the best record for a team vs. any division since the start of last season.

Why Bet on Miami?

The Heat started slowly this season but have turned it on with a six-game winning streak following a 111-105 win in Charlotte on Tuesday. Jimmy Butler shot 10-of-14 from the field and 11-of-14 from the foul line to finish with 32 points along with five assists and four rebounds. Not only was it Butler’s first 30-point game of the season, but the 32 points were two fewer than what Butler managed in the prior two games combined.

Bam Adebayo added 21 points and 10 boards for his fifth straight double-double. In each of those double-doubles, Adebayo has recorded at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, marking the longest 20-point, 10-rebound streak of his career, surpassing his previous best of three consecutive games. Additionally, he is now just the third Heat player in franchise history with a 20-point, 10-rebound streak of at least five games, joining LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal. Below are the longest such streaks.

But Miami’s true defensive star on Tuesday was Haywood Highsmith, who accumulated five steals and two blocks to go along with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists. The Heat are 6-0 with him in the starting lineup. Miami has started eight different lineups in the first 11 games so far this season.

Miami’s defense is pressuring opponents into a 17.2 percent turnover rate, the third-highest in the NBA, as Miami opponents are averaging 17.2 turnovers per game, tying the fourth-most in the NBA. Additionally, nine different Heat players are currently averaging at least one steal per game this season.

The Heat will get a nice boost on Thursday with the return from injury of Caleb Martin, one of the team’s breakout performers in the run to the 2023 NBA Finals. Martin, who has missed the last 10 games with left knee tendinosis, is listed as available. It had been bothering him in camp and the preseason but Martin played in the Heat’s season-opening win over the Detroit Pistons on Oct. 25. But he hardly looked like himself on either end of the court, finishing with two points on 1-of-7 shooting from the field in 20 minutes off the bench. The decision was then made to shut him down to allow the knee pain to diminish.

Coach Erik Spoelstra knows why the team is winning: Defense. The unit has been one of the NBA’s best in that six-game run: “It’s our identity; it’s our commitment,” Spoelstra said. “It takes a great deal of effort every single night and I’m seeing more multiple efforts, more commitment to do tough things, which is required to have a very good defense. It’s never easy with the way teams are playing, with the pace and the space and the talent. But we’re showing more resolve to do those tough things.”
