The San Francisco 49ers have dominated the Los Angeles Rams in their regular-season series in recent seasons and that figures to continue on Sunday with the Niners bigger than touchdown favorites on the NFL odds in Los Angeles.

Last Season

The Niners swept the 2022 season series as they usually do in the regular season against the Rams. The game at SoFi Stadium ended by a score of 31-14. Niners running back Christian McCaffrey became the 11th player in NFL history with a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown and a receiving touchdown in one game. He finished with 158 total yards. Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 235 yards and two touchdowns as San Francisco scored 24 unanswered points to finish its eighth consecutive regular-season victory over its NFC West rival. Jimmy G is now with the Raiders.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The 49ers looked like the NFC’s best team in Week 1 as they won 30-7 at a good Pittsburgh team. Brock Purdy passed for 220 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 111.3 rating. Purdy is the first quarterback in NFL history to win each of his first six career regular-season starts and throw at least two touchdown passes in each start. He is also the first quarterback in NFL history with a passer rating of 95-or-higher in each of his first six career regular-season starts.

Brandon Aiyuk was his top target, catching 8-of-8 targets for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The 129 yards were a new career high for Aiyuk in a contest where he was looking like the 49ers’ No. 1 receiver over Deebo Samuel. The fact that Aiyuk drew “only” eight targets was a product of the 49ers going up two scores just 10 minutes into the game. Samuel caught 5-of-7 targets for 55 yards, adding two rushes for eight yards. Samuel touched the ball on the 49ers’ first two plays from scrimmage but was otherwise held in check by the Steelers’ man coverage.

Christian McCaffrey rushed 22 times for 152 yards and a touchdown, adding three receptions for 17 additional yards. The 150-yard rushing effort was the fourth of McCaffrey’s career, and his first as a 49er. After producing 52 yards on 11 first-half carries, McCaffrey took his first rushing attempt of the third quarter to the house from 65 yards out to give the 49ers a 27-7 lead.

After battling a right quad injury and a couple of rough preseason games, rookie kicker Jake Moody responded with a perfect debut, connecting on all three of his field goal attempts and all three extra point tries. However, in his first game as San Francisco’s starting right tackle, Colton McKivitz struggled against Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt, who finished with three sacks and forced and recovered a fumble.

Over the last two seasons (2022-23), the 49ers offense has turned the ball over 18 times, which is tied for the 2nd-fewest amount of turnovers in the NFL during that span (Det. – 16; Cin. – 18). Since 2022, San Francisco’s offense has given the ball away 18 times while the defense has forced 32 turnovers. The team’s +14 turnover differential ranks 1st in the NFL over that span.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that 2022 NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa should be at full capacity for Week 2. Bosa played just 35 defensive snaps during Sunday’s win after missing all of camp holding out.

Why Bet on Los Angeles?

The Rams were surprise 30-13 winners in Seattle in Week 1. The Rams outscored the Seahawks 23-0 in the second half en route to the win as well, as L.A.’s defense’s held Seattle’s offense to 12 net yards in the second half.

Matthew Stafford passed for 334 yards and rookie wide receiver Puke Nacua recorded 10 receptions for 119 yards. Stafford has eight career season-opening games with at least 300 passing yards, tied with Matt Ryan (eight) for the second-most such games all-time. Only Drew Brees (10 games) has more.

Nacua became the fifth player in NFL history to record at least 10 receptions in his NFL debut, joining Sid Blanks (13 in Week 1, 1964), Keke Coutee (11 in Week 4, 2018), Anquan Boldin (10 in Week 1, 2003) and Earl Cooper (10 in Week 1, 1980). Tutu Atwell caught 6-of-8 targets for 119 yards. Atwell tied Nacua for a team-high in receiving yards, though Nacua earned seven more targets than him. Nacua was close to the line of scrimmage while Atwell saw a mix of short and deep throws. Both should continue to shine with star Cooper Kupp on the PUP list.

“Did a great job,” Stafford said postgame of the two young wideouts. “It’s what I’ve been seeing in practice, and those guys gotta take a lot of confidence from going out there in practice and making plays like that. And, again, there’s a few I want back with both of those guys that could’ve been an even better day.”

Rams head coach Sean McVay said there weren’t any players who suffered injuries against the Seahawks that should impact their availability for Week 2 against the 49ers. McVay said offensive lineman Joe Noteboom sustained a sprained ankle, Puka Nacua “got his ribs banged up a little bit,” defensive back Jason Taylor II sustained a groin injury, and defensive back Ahkello Witherspoon “basically had a rib and hip contusion with that shot that he took at the end of the game,” but “all of those guys should be okay.”

The Rams did not face Niners QB Brock Purdy in either of their two matchups with the 49ers last season – in both games played last October, it was Jimmy Garoppolo under center. Purdy has a different style of play than Garoppolo, so it will be a new challenge for the Rams’ defense to prepare for.
