Monday Night Football Week 7 Odds: 49ers at Vikings

Week 7 around the NFL comes to an end Monday night from the Twin Cities as the San Francisco 49ers visit the Minnesota Vikings, who remain without injured superstar receiver Justin Jefferson. Thus the Niners are solid favorites on the NFL odds even though they have some injury concerns as well. 2023 NFL Expert Analysis 49ers at Vikings MNF | MyBookie Sportsbook | Week 7 NFL: Thursday, October 19 to Monday, October 23, 2023

Series History

The 49ers lead all-time 25-23-1 including playoffs. They last played in Week 12 of the 2021 season at San Francisco and the Niners won 34-26. WR Deebo Samuel ran for two touchdowns and tailback Elijah Mitchell rushed for 133 yards and a score. San Francisco finished with 208 yards rushing on 39 carries. There were six scores in the third quarter alone, including a 99-yard kickoff return score by Minnesota‘s Kene Nwangwu.

Why Bet on San Francisco?

The 49ers surely will be a bit angry as they come off a 19-17 loss in Cleveland in Week 6 with stars Christian McCaffrey and Deebo Samuel both leaving injured. Brock Purdy completed 12 of 27 passes for 125 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He added three rushing attempts for seven yards. His 72 first-half passing yards marked Purdy’s lowest total of the season, and Purdy was even worse after halftime, mustering just 53 passing yards in addition to throwing his first interception of the season. That yardage total included 42 yards on the final drive to get into field-goal range, but Jake Moody’s 41-yard attempt missed wide right to hand Purdy his first career regular-season loss.

Purdy has posted a passer rating of 111.9, which is the 2nd-best mark in the NFL. McCaffrey had 52 yards and a TD before leaving with an oblique injury. He didn’t practice on Thursday or Friday but was upgraded to a limited session to close the week before being listed as questionable so he’s likely to play. However, Samuel is expected to miss multiple games with a shoulder injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Samuel is dealing with a hairline fracture of his shoulder, which will keep the star receiver out a minimum of three weeks, including the team’s Week 9 bye. The team’s best offensive lineman, Trent Williams, is doubtful.

“It’s always different (without Samuel). What we did last week, we weren’t sure of him throughout the week, so we had contingency plans,” Shanahan said. “He’s been banged up a few weeks before that too, so this will give him a chance to settle down, and hopefully, come back 100 percent (out of the Bye).”

The 49ers defense is holding opposing QBs to an average passer rating of 67.2, which is the lowest average passer rating allowed in the NFL. The 49ers are the only team in the NFL to hold opponents to 0 points off giveaways. The 49ers defense has held opposing offenses without a 100-yard individual rusher in 33-consecutive games dating back to Week 9 of 2021.

San Francisco’s 33-consecutive games without an opposing 100-yard rusher marks the longest active streak in the NFL and the longest streak by an NFL team since the New Orleans Saints streak from 2017-2020. It is also the fourth-longest streak in the NFL since at least 2006.

The offense has put together 26 red zone drives, which is tied for the most in the NFL entering Week 7. Out of 67 possible drives, the 49ers offense has gone three-and-out 11 times, for a three-and-out percentage of 16.4% which is tied for the 5th-lowest rate in the NFL.

Why Bet on Minnesota?

The Vikings lost superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson in Week 5 for several weeks due to a hamstring injury – maybe the season. But they won their first game without him last Sunday, 19-13 over Chicago.

The Vikings struggled on offense, going 2-for-13 (15.4%) against the league’s worst third-down defense. Chicago held Minnesota to season-lows in total yards (220), touchdowns (1) and first downs (12). Minnesota did not have a carry longer than eight yards and finished with just a 2.1 yards per carry average.

Kirk Cousins completed 21 of 31 passes for 181 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also rushed twice for minus-5 yards and committed two fumbles, losing one. Cousins bore little resemblance to the prolific performer he’s often been with Jefferson available, but the veteran signal-caller was able to do just enough to help the Vikings squeeze out a close victory.

Alexander Mattison rushed 18 times for 44 yards and brought in four of seven targets for 28 yards in the win. Mattison notably outpaced backfield mate Cam Akers by 17 carries after there was only a three-carry difference between the two in Week 5.

Guard Ezra Cleveland will miss this game. Cleveland suffered a foot injury in Week 6 at Chicago and was replaced by veteran Dalton Risner, who signed with Minnesota after the 2023 season started. The injury will halt Cleveland’s consecutive starts streak at 45 regular-season games, which began Dec. 6, 2020, and was the longest among Vikings offensive linemen.

Outside linebacker Marcus Davenport was placed on Injured Reserve on Wednesday. Davenport suffered an ankle injury on just his 17th snap versus the Bears. Cornerback Akayleb Evans is dealing with oblique soreness. He played 50 of 66 snaps against the Bears.

Davenport signed a one-year, $13 million free agent deal with the Vikings as a fresh start following five injury-plagued seasons with the New Orleans Saints, who made him a first-round draft pick in 2018. The Vikings hoped to pair him with veteran outside linebacker Danielle Hunter to form a formidable set of pass rushers, but a series of injuries has limited Davenport to 27.7% of the Vikings’ defense snaps this season.
