Last Season

In Week 2 last season, the Vikings visited the Eagles as well and lost 24-7. Jalen Hurts was masterful, throwing for 333 yards on 26-of-31 passing. He opened the game connecting on his first 11 pass attempts, setting a new career high. Hurts had one touchdown passing – a bomb to Quez Watkins for 53 yards – and two rushing scores as well as another 57 yards on the ground. Cornerback Darius Slay had two interceptions and five pass breakups, while keeping Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson in check. The defense forced three turnovers – all Kirk Cousins interceptions.

Why Bet on Minnesota on TNF?

The Vikings won an NFL-record 11 one-score games last year but now have lost two straight following their home playoff defeat to the Giants and a 20-17 home loss to Tampa Bay in the opener. Vikings receiver and reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year Justin Jefferson recorded nine receptions for 150 yards in the loss.

Jefferson, who has recorded at least 100 receiving yards in 25 of his first 51 career games, surpassed Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (55 games) as the fastest player to reach 25 career games with at least 100 receiving yards in NFL history. Jefferson surpassed Hall of Famer Randy Moss (25 years and 256 days old) as the youngest player to reach 25 career games with at least 100 receiving yards all-time.

Jefferson now has nine career games with at least 150 receiving yards and Randy Moss (eight games) and Jerry Rice (eight) for the second-most such games by a player in his first four seasons in NFL history. Only Hall of Famer Lance Alworth (10 games) has more.

Kirk Cousins completed 33-of-44 passes for 344 yards, two touchdowns, an interception, and two fumbles in the loss. His first fumble came on an offensive line error after center Garrett Bradbury left the game due to injury and didn’t return. Bradbury might sit this week. Cousins’ second fumble killed a drive and his interception was into tight coverage in the red zone at the end of the first half.

No. 1 running back Alexander Mattison rushed 11 times for 34 yards in the Vikings’ Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers, adding three receptions for 10 additional yards.. As a runner, he only averaged 3.1 yards per carry, but dominated the backfield split, getting 11 out of 14 running back carries for the team. He also added a receiving touchdown, catching the pass in motion and breaking a tackle on his way to the end zone.

“We had some good plays dialed up; I think we had some good runs in there. We just, you know, needed to get to them,” said Mattison. “We needed to give ourselves the opportunity to do that, and it’s hard to do that when you’re playing in a situation where you’re turning the ball over or have penalties – anything like that. It’s just hard to get to the plays you want to get to. Just one of those days where it didn’t bounce our way.”

Outside linebacker’s Marcus Davenport Vikings debut in Week 1 was postponed after he dealt with an ankle injury in practice late last week. That Minnesota defense allowed only 242 yards.

“We made too many mistakes. Team game; you gotta play together. When we get a chance to go up a little bit, then you gotta go up a little bit,” safety Harrison Smith said. “You gotta make, make more plays on defense and get the ball from them. Some penalties in critical situations, stuff like that.”

New England is 0-11 when allowing 25-plus points since 2021.

Why Bet on Philadelphia on TNF?

The Eagles were 25-20 winners at New England in Week 1. The Patriots defense kept them in the game, holding a high-powered Philly offense to 252 total yards and one touchdown drive, where the Eagles took over at the Pats 26-yard line.

2022 NFL MVP runner-up Jalen Hurts struggled to get much of anything going, throwing for only 170 yards with a touchdown and logging a mere 37 yards on the ground. He also lost a fumble late in the fourth quarter, which gave the Patriots favorable field position and a great chance to take their first lead of the contest.

“I have to protect the ball,” Hurts said. “That was completely me. I have to do a better job at the end of the game in those moments. But you take the good, bad and the ugly. We’re going to take this one and we’re going to learn from our mistakes. I guarantee you that. We’re going to continue to grow.”

Cornerback Darius Slay collected three tackles (one solo), three passes defended and returned an interception for a touchdown. Slay was able to get his hands on a tipped pass intended for Kendrick Bourne and take it 70 yards to the end zone to stake the Eagles to a 10-0 lead halfway through the first quarter. It was his first touchdown since the 2021 season.

Strong play from the defense – which had a touchdown, forced fumble and recovery, and two sacks – proved to be the difference in sloppy weather conditions in the season opener.

“Anytime you create two turnovers that lead to 14 points, that’s big time,” Nick Sirianni said. “That is the difference in the game.”

Eagles Pro Bowl defensive Fletcher Cox (ribs) did not practice Monday. Safety Reed Blankenship and running back Kenneth Gainwell also missed practice with a rib injury, while LB Nakobe Dean (foot) and CB James Bradberry (concussion) were held out with various ailments. Those two are going to miss Thursday.

With Dean out, the Eagles are signing linebacker and former Tennessee Titans first-round pick Rashaan Evans to their practice squad. Elliss and Zach Cunningham are the only other off-ball linebackers on the active roster. Veteran Nicholas Morrow and rookie Ben VanSumeren are on the practice squad.

Gainwell saw 41 of the Eagles’ 68 running back snaps in the team’s Week 1 win in a huge surprise. Trade acquisition D’Andre Swift rushed one time for three yards, adding one reception for zero yards.

Philadelphia has the most season-opening victories in the NFL since 2011, capturing 11 of its last 13 kickoff weekend matchups (7-1 record in Week 1 games since 2016). Nick Sirianni is 3-0 in season openers for his Eagles career, all on the road. Hurts has won 18 of his last 19 regular-season starts.
