Betting odds believe the AFC South to be the weakest division in terms of representing the AFC, as they have the lowest odds of winning the AFC at +540. However, the AFC South might also be the most overlooked division in all of the NFL.
The Tennessee Titans were the number-one team in the AFC last season, and the Colts were one win away from going to the playoffs as well. The Jacksonville Jaguars made major splashes in the offseason, and the Houston Texans remain in their rebuild but are loaded with assets due to trading quarterback DeShaun Watson. Let’s watch our NFL analysis of the AFC South division so you can plan your bets against the NFL AFC Championship Betting Lines.
AFC South Favorites to Win, Upsets, and Surprises for the 2022 Season | NFL Betting Analysis
AFC South Betting Favorites
The betting odds favorite in the AFC South is the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts currently are -125 to win the division.
It is easy to see why the Colts are so liked as they have a star running back in Jonathan Taylor and have a new quarterback, replacing Carson Wentz with longtime Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.
The Colts have undoubtedly become a better team; the only question is if they should be a favorite over the Tennessee Titans to win the division.
Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry is the favorite to win the AFC Comeback Player of the Year, currently at +350. Henry was on pace to lead the league in rushing in three straight seasons before being hurt eight games into last season.
A fully healthy Henry may be not only an AFC Comeback Player of the Year favorite, but also an MVP candidate.
AFC South – Possible Upsets
With trading away AJ Brown and losing Harold Landry to a torn ACL, the Titans aren’t likely to repeat this season as the best team in the AFC. However, even if they do not repeat the same success, they can still be extremely competitive with a full season of running back Derrick Henry and have a real shot at winning the division.
The Titans are currently the second favorite to win the division at +149, but the oddsmakers may be second-guessing the Titans too much.
A great betting upset is for Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson to win Coach of the Year. Pederson currently sits at +1725, which is 10th among all coaches.
However, Pederson is a former Super Bowl-winning coach, coming in with an incredibly talented quarterback in his second season. Pederson also comes in with wildly low expectations due to the job former Jaguars coach Urban Meyer did last season.
If Pederson is able to make the Jaguars competitive, he will be one of the top names for the award.
AFC South Surprises
A major surprise coming out of the AFC South could be the potential Rookie of the Year winner, Houston Texans running back Dameon Pierce currently is +900 to win Rookie of the Year, but the running back is poised to have the starting role in Houston with a ton of carries.
Pierce was a standout back at the University of Florida and was selected in the fourth round in the 2022 NFL Draft by the Texans, but is behind the likes of Breece Hall, Kenny Pickett, and George Pickens.
Another surprise from the AFC South division could be quarterback Malik Willis winning Rookie of the Year as well. Willis was one of the biggest talking points coming out of the draft but surprisingly wasn’t drafted until the third round.
Willis is loaded with potential, and the only question is if he can bottle it all. If starting Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill goes down or struggles, Willis could be thrown into the fire immediately to lead the Titans.
Willis is currently +5000 to win the award, but if he is able to keep the Titans competitive while starting, he shoots up the oddsmaker’s books to win the award.
