2023 AFC South Betting Favorites, Possible Upsets, and Surprises

2023 AFC South Betting Favorites, Possible Upsets, and Surprises

As we get ever closer to the start of the new NFL season, now is the time to start looking ahead to how we might play each individual division. Some divisions are a whole lot easier to predict than others, or so it would seem, but we always tend to see some favorites falter, while dark horses rise. I think it’s fair to suggest that the AFC South is, for now, one of the weaker divisions in football, so there is certainly a chance for some surprises in this one.

The odds are in, and now we have to decide how the South will play out. Let’s take a look at the current AFC South betting odds to see if there are any potential surprises or upsets waiting to happen in this division.

AFC South | American Football Conference – Southern Division
Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Tennessee Titans

Jacksonville Jaguars (-165)

2022 looked to be just another disappointing season for the Jaguars, but this team came to life in the second half of the season, winning 6 of their last 7 games to win the division and make it into the playoffs. That was a big step forward for a team that has been something of a circus for the last few years. Trevor Lawrence looks like the real deal at QB, but he needs more protection and a few more weapons to work with before this team can be considered a contender. Still, they look like the team to beat this season in the South.

Tennessee Titans (+420)

After a 6-year streak of winning seasons, it was a big backward step for the Titans in 2022, as they ended the year at 7-10. A big part of their problem was at the QB position, where Ryan Tannehill was oft injured and looked pretty ineffective in the games that he did play. Malik Willis looked shaky as the backup, all of which suggests that Will Levis might get his shot sooner rather than later. They need the QB to be effective to get the best out of Derrick Henry, who was kept in check more often than usual last season when the Titans became dependent on the run game.

Indianapolis Colts (+550)

The Colts have never really recovered since Andrew Luck announced his retirement from football right before the start of a new season a few years back. They have not won the division since 2014 and hit a new low last year with a record of 4-12-1. Instead of relying on a veteran QB to lead the team, as they have done with the likes of Matt Ryan and Phillip Rivers, the Colts will be putting their trust in #4 pick Anthony Richardson. They will also have a new head coach in Shane Steichen, who worked wonders with Jalen Hurts in Philly. If he can do the same with Richardson, the Colts might just be the surprise pick in the South.

Houston Texans (+800)

There are reasons for Texans fans to be excited about the direction their team is headed, but we are talking about a longer project, so don’t expect too much this season. The Texans are coming off a 3-13-1 season and could well be looking at a similar type of season in 2023. Under new head coach Demeco Ryans, the Texans got aggressive in the Draft landing QB CJ Stroud and making a huge trade to get their hands on edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. It will be fun to watch this team grow, but I would not be throwing any money in their direction.
