Series History

Washington’s all-time record against Philadelphia is 88-82-5 and 3-3 in the last three seasons. The Commanders are 43-42-2 on the road against the Eagles. Last season, Philadelphia won the first meeting 24-8 at Washington but the Commanders handed the Eagles their first loss of 2022 with a 32-21 upset win at Lincoln Financial Field in Week 10. Philly had a season-high four turnovers. A.J Brown had a catch knock off his hands and turn into an interception. And Dallas Goedert fumbled in the fourth quarter when linebacker Jamin Davis grabbed the tight end by the facemask — but no penalty was called.

Why Bet on Washington?

After a pair of close/lucky wins to open the season, the Commanders were dominated in a 37-3 home loss to Buffalo in Week 3 as the Bills forced five turnovers. They tormented Washington QB Sam Howell, sacking him nine times to go with four interceptions. The Commanders also lost a fumble. It was just the sixth time since the Super Bowl era began in 1966 and first time since 1995 that a defense sacked a QB nine-plus times and picked him off four-plus times.

Howell completed 19 of 29 passes for 170 yards with no touchdowns. He also rushed once for 18 yards. In addition to the sacks, Howell was held to 5.9 yards per attempt, and two of his four picks led to a combined 10 points for the Bills. Howell has been pressured on 36.6% of his passes, fourth highest in the league. And that has been done while facing rushes of five defenders or more only 20.3% of the time, third lowest in the NFL. He has been hit on 26.2% of his passes; only seven quarterbacks have been hit more often.

Howell’s time in the pocket ranks 15th in the NFL at 2.48 seconds as does his time before throwing. He needs to be quicker. For the first three starts of his career, Howell looked as good as one could hope for a quarterback who was still developing. He was still holding onto the ball, but he was directing the offense well, dissecting defenses and using his legs to buy time.

“I gave up some situations where I was trying to get the ball out of my hands and trying to avoid a negative play,” Howell said. “I just kind of forced something. It wasn’t a good decision. Just all those bad plays. I’ll learn from it; I’ll be better from it.”

If Washington’s offense has any hope of gaining some traction this season, it has to protect Howell as much as possible. It’s on the entire unit to fix it, and they know it.

“It’s a team effort.,” Brian Robinson Jr. said. “It’s a team effort. It’s something we all gotta work on together, and I think we’ll get better with that.”

No. 1 tight end Logan Thomas missed the loss with a concussion but should be back this week. Through the two games prior to his concussion, he caught six targets for 65 yards and a touchdown. In his place against the Bills, backups Cole Turner and John Bates combined for six receptions and 47 receiving yards.

Why Bet on Philadelphia?

Philadelphia enters Week 4 having won 20 of their past 21 regular-season games started by quarterback Jalen Hurts, including each of his past nine regular-season starts dating back to Week 11 of the 2022 season. With a win against Washington, Hurts can become the second starting quarterback in the Super Bowl era with multiple 10-game winning streaks within his first four career seasons, joining Patrick Mahomes (10 games from Week 11, 2019 to Week 4, 2020; 10 consecutive wins from Week 6 to Week 16 in 2020).

In Monday’s 25-11 win in Tampa, Hurts rushed for his 29th career touchdown, the most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in his first 50 career games in NFL history. With a rushing touchdown Sunday, Hurts can join Cam Newton (33 rushing touchdowns) and Josh Allen (31) as the only quarterbacks in NFL history with at least 30 rushing touchdowns in their first four seasons.

Hurts played through flu-like symptoms on MNF. Center Jason Kelce said a number of Eagles were under the weather leading up to the game: “It feels like everyone in the world is right now. “It’s kind of ramping up again. We had a lot of guys on the team this week … it’s kind of maybe that time of year right now in Philly.”

De’Andre Swift rushed 16 times for 130 yards and caught one of two targets for eight yards in Monday’s win. Swift continued to handle the lead role, even with Kenneth Gainwell (ribs) back after missing one game. Gainwell rushed for just 43 yards on 14 carries in his return, while Swift boosted his rushing total to a whopping 305 yards over the past two games.

He has officially emerged as Philadelphia’s lead back after two touches in the season opener as Swift leads the league in rushing average (6.8) among running backs with at least 40 carries. The Eagles haven’t used him much as a pass-catcher yet — he has five receptions for 14 yards — but he can be a weapon in that area as well.

The Philly ground game rushed for 201 yards against a run defense ranked fourth coming into Monday, allowing just 54 yards per game. Wide receiver A.J. Brown also had his best outing of the season in yards (131) and receptions (nine).

No. 3 WR Quez Watkins was out Monday and may sit again this week with a hamstring injury. Olamide Zaccheaus filled in for Watkins and caught a long touchdown but was only targeted three times.

Tackle Jalen Carter, the No. 9 overall pick in this year’s draft, has been spectacular so far. He leads the Eagles alongside Josh Sweat and Jordan Davis with 1.5 sacks. According to Pro Football Focus, his 93.2 defensive grade is the best among interior defenders and third among all defenders. The only two players with higher grades: 2022 Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa (93.9) and Myles Garrett (93.8). Carter also has 15 quarterback hits through three games. On its own, that number is already impressive, but that’s also one more than Aaron Donald, one more than Aaron Donald.
