What is Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles waiting for? Everyone knows that Baker Mayfield is going to be the Bucs’ Week 1 starter under center. The former No. 1 overall pick was always the favorite to beat out 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask, who was the backup to Tom Brady the past two years.

NFL Regular Season: September 7, 2023 – January 7, 2024

Mayfield started the Bucs’ first preseason game and Trask the second. And Trask played well at times, going 20 of 28 for 218 yards and a touchdown in a 13-6 win over the Jets. John Wolford relieved him following a half, but after the third-stringer suffered a neck injury that required being stretchered off the field. Instead of Mayfield playing, and he was dressed, Trask re-entered. Bowles said to read nothing into that, but you don’t put your possible regular-season QB back in there cold like that.

“Trask was warmer at the time, and we took out the line and he was ready to go,” Bowles said. “We were going to play Baker at the end of the half, but we wanted to see Kyle in the two-minute period, so kind of left him in and then the time kind of went down. We wanted to play John in the second half, it wasn’t fair to put Baker in there without the line he had, and Trask was already warmed up so when John got hurt, we just put him back in to finish.”

If Bowles waits until after the third preseason game to name a starter, it would give the team two weeks to practice with a starter. Bowles indicated that both Mayfield and Trask would play in the final preseason game against Baltimore.

But we are assuming it will be Mayfield in Week 1. The only other job up for grabs is at kicker between Chase McLaughlin and Rodrigo Blankenship.

This will be the second season in a row the Vikings open at home, after kicking off the 2022 campaign by hosting the Packers, and sixth overall since U.S. Bank Stadium opened in 2016. The Vikes are 6-1 in home openers at U.S. Bank Stadium, with the only loss occurring in 2020 when fans were not in attendance. The Vikings have opened their season against the Buccaneers four previous times: 1981, 1982, 1998 and 2005. Minnesota and Tampa Bay shared the NFC Central Division from 1976, when the Bucs entered the league through 2001. Minnesota will be breaking in a new featured back in Alexander Mattison. After signing a two-year extension with the Vikings, he is officially the incumbent starter, with Dalvin Cook now on the New York Jets.

Chicago Bears (+1)

Tampa Bay’s home opener won’t be quite as tough a ticket as it was when Tom Brady was the quarterback. These teams last played Week 7 of the 2021 season in Tampa with the Bucs winning 38-3. Brady became the first NFL QB to ever reach 600 career TD passes during that one. Mike Evans caught three Brady TD passes overall. Justin Fields was just a raw rookie then but now is one of the rising star QBs for Chicago. Last year, Fields ran for 1,143 yards, the second-highest mark ever by an NFL quarterback.

Philadelphia Eagles (+6.5)

When: Monday, September 25, 7:15pm ET
TV/Streaming: ABC

It’s almost a good thing the Bucs host the Bears and Justin Fields in Week 2 because Eagles QB Jalen Hurts is a better version of Fields. Hurts finished second in the NFL’s MVP voting last year after supplementing his outstanding passing numbers (3,706 yards, 22 touchdowns) with 760 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. This will be an emotional game at Raymond James Stadium because the Bucs will celebrate the career of new Hall of Famer Ronde Barber. Arguably the biggest play of the defensive back’s career was a pick-six against the Eagles in the 2002 NFC Championship Game.

New Orleans Saints (+4.5)

Finally, a division game for the Bucs. Not long ago, it was GOAT QBs in Drew Brees vs. Tom Brady and now it’s Derek Carr vs. likely Baker Mayfield. New Orleans holds a 39-23 regular season edge in the all-time regular season series against the Buccaneers, the club’s best winning percentage (.629) versus an NFL opponent that they have played more than 11 times. New Orleans is 21-13 all-time at home against Tampa Bay. In 2022, Tampa Bay swept the series for the first time since 2007. The game in New Orleans was a final of 20-10 in Week 2. Jameis Winston had three picks for the Saints.
