Bet With The Best on NBA Game 3: Pistons vs Knicks Odds, Picks and Betting Prediction

Pistons vs Knicks Odds: The Eastern Conference first-round playoff series between third-seeded New York and sixth-seeded Detroit is tied at one as it shifts to the Motor City for Game 3 on Thursday night, the first game of an NBA playoff tripleheader. The Knicks are short favorites on the NBA odds.

With the series knotted at 1-1, New York is now -250 on the series line and Detroit +205. The Knicks in seven games is the correct score favorite at +255, which would be my lean. The longshot is Pistons in five at +1300. That it goes six games is actually the slight +150 leader over seven (+160) with five at 265.

Spread/Total Subject to Change: Knicks -1.5 (total 214.5)

NBA Moneylines subject to Change: New York -116 / Detroit -105

This marks Detroit’s first home playoff game since 2019. The Knicks were 1-1 in Motown during the regular season. On Nov. 1, New York rolled to a 128-98 victory but Detroit got off to a really slow start to the 2024-25 campaign under new coach J.B. Bickerstaff.

Jalen Brunson scored 15 of his 36 points in the first quarter of that victory, while Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists for New York, which never trailed and led by at least 20 points for the final 40 minutes.

The Knicks tripled the Pistons’ scoring in the first quarter, taking a 39-13 lead, and were never threatened. Cade Cunningham had 22 points for the Pistons.

On April 10, the Knicks lost 115-106 in Detroit. New York led for much of the game, but Detroit outscored them by nine in the fourth quarter. Cunningham had 36 points and eight assists for the Pistons. Jalen Duren had 18 points and 13 rebounds.

New York was without starters OG Anunoby (thumb) and Josh Hart (knee) and Brunson was just 5-for-15 for 15 points.

Pistons End Record Losing Streak In Game 2

Detroit looked like it would win Game 1 of this series in New York entering the fourth with a solid lean but was on the wrong end of a 21-0 run in the quarter and lost its 15th straight playoff game, a league record. But that streak ended Monday in a 100-94 upset.

“It’s something that the city’s been waiting on for a long time, so we feel good about it and we’re ready to get back to the crib. … It’s gonna be a lot of fun. I’m excited to see it.”

Veteran point guard Dennis Schröder is proving to be one of the most valuable pickups at the trade deadline. Needing backcourt depth with Jaden Ivey sidelined, the Pistons traded for Schröder and he had a 20-point performance in Game 2.

His most meaningful make in his Pistons tenure came when he broke a tie at 94 with a 3-pointer over Jalen Brunson with 52.2 seconds remaining. Schröder made 6 of 10 from the field and 3 of 5 from 3-point range. He also had three assists and two rebounds.

J.B. Bickerstaff

“The ultimate trust,” Detroit coach Bickerstaff said of playing Schröder in crunch time. “Dennis, obviously, (it was) the shots that he made, but his ability to allow Cade to get to different spots and then feed Cade. We can play off that.”

Knicks Crying Foul Over Game 2

The two big stories out of New York from Game 2 were the Knicks believing they got hosed by the referees and the disappearance of Karl-Anthony Towns. The Pistons wound up shooting 34 free throws in their 100-94 victory, while the Knicks had only 19 attempts.

The Knicks want to be physical with Pistons star Cade Cunningham, as they were in their Game 1 victory, but struggled to do it without being whistled for fouls Monday. Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau thought Cunningham was getting calls that New York star Jalen Brunson wasn’t.

The Pistons took 14 free throws in the first two quarters and Brunson attempted the only two given to the Knicks, although Brunson ended up with 11 attempts from the charity stripe and Cunningham 12.

Tom Thibodeau

“I don’t understand how on one side you talk about direct line drives. The guy is getting fouled and it’s not being called,” Thibodeau said. “And look, I don’t really give a crap how they call the game, as long as it’s consistent on both sides. So, if Cunningham is driving and there is marginal contact and he is getting to the line, then Jalen deserves to be getting to the line. It’s really that simple.”

Knicks at Pistons Expert Prediction

Cunningham is shooting 33.3% (6-of-18) when guarded by OG Anunoby in this series, by far his most frequent matchup. CC holds career averages of 25.3 points and 7.0 assists at home against the Knicks.

Harris has averaged 15.7 points and 7.7 rebounds against New York this season on 50.8% FG and 47.8% from deep. Center Jalen Duren has averaged 10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds assists on 84.4% FG in his six games vs. New York two double-doubles.

Jalen Brunson

The Knicks need more ball movement as Brunson has been holding onto it too long and New York had just 15 assists in Game 2, its lowest total the entire season. “Definitely taking each possession at a time and trying to figure out the best course of action,” Brunson said after Game 2. “It’s very tough when there’s one ball. We have a lot of great players on this team and definitely it’s on my shoulders. I’m not gonna point fingers and say some people do that and this. It’s on me to make sure I set the table.”

Brunson has scored 30+ points in 5-of-6 matchups against the Pistons this season for 30.7 points on 48.5% FG and 39.6% from deep. He shot 12-for-27 in both Game 1 and Game 2, In four career road games in Detroit with the Knicks, Brunson has averaged 23.5 points on 54.8% FG and 56.5% from deep. Pistons 114, Knicks 113.

Pistons vs Knicks, Game 2

Pistons vs Knicks Odds: The sixth-seeded Detroit looked like they would steal Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series at the third-seeded New York… only for the Pistons to fold like a house of cards in the fourth quarter in losing their 15th straight playoff game.

That’s the longest such active playoff skid by any team not just in the NBA but also MLB, the NFL and NHL. The Knicks are solid home favorites again on the NBA odds for Monday’s Game 2.

Spread/Total Subject to Change: Knicks -6.5 (total 222)
Playoff Expert Prediction: Knicks 118, Pistons 113

How to Bet Pistons vs Knicks Odds, NBA Online Betting for Playoffs

With New York taking Game 1 by a score of 123-112, the Knicks are now -650 on the series line and the Pistons +450.

I doubt Detroit will win the series but anticipate the Pistons to secure one home game after Game 2. I suggest betting on the Pistons at +2.5 games in the series at -110, given their recent playoff return.

The last time Detroit won a playoff game was in the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals, when it lost in six to Boston.

New York has taken a 1-0 series lead for a third straight playoff series. It beat Philadelphia in six in last year’s East first round but lost in seven to Indiana in the semifinals.

What about Semifinals?

The winner of this series almost surely will be facing East No. 2 seed and defending NBA champion Boston in the semifinals.

The Celtics are -140 favorites to repeat in the East with the Knicks at +1000 and Pistons priced +25000. New York hasn’t won the East since 2000 and Detroit hasn’t since 2005 when it lost in the NBA Finals to San Antonio.

Pistons Blew Game 1 In Fourth

New York assigned various players to guard Cunningham throughout the night, but Knicks small forward OG Anunoby took the lead as the primary defender.

Cade Cunningham

“Playing our game, battling on the boards, playing with pace, and getting stops, those are the many things that clicked for us,” Cunningham said. “At the end, [we] just got to clean up the little things. … It was a solid game through three quarters, but the fourth quarter comes, and there are things we’ll clean up.”

The Pistons were 3-1 against the Knicks in the regular season. Cunningham scored 22, 29, 36 and 36 points in those four with a triple-double on Dec. 7 and shot 56.3% from the field overall in the season series.

Knicks Get Boost From Unlikely Source

Jalen Brunson

New York All-Star Brunson had a slow start in Game 1 but thrived in the second half, particularly in the fourth quarter, leading the Knicks to a 21-0 run for victory over Detroit. He scored only 18 first-half points with a 27% shooting rate but created 44 points and shot 8-for-12 in the second half, showcasing his clutch performance.

“Things turned really, really quickly,” Brunson said about the fourth quarter comeback. “I think we were just connected in the way we were getting stops out there. The way we played defensively was key for us.”

Backup point guard Cam Payne emerged as the key catalyst, scoring 11 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter. Coach Tom Thibodeau’s decision to expand the rotation to nine players proved effective, leveraging Payne’s extensive postseason experience in his 59th playoff game.

Tom Thibodeau

“The thing about him, he knows exactly who he is,” Thibodeau said. “He comes in with great energy every game, carries himself well each and every day. He gave us a huge spark, that’s been who he is.”

In the end, the Knicks’ aggressive style worked. The Pistons turned the ball over late, and the role players missed shots they had made previously. “I thought our defense got us going,” Thibodeau said. “We got some stops, we got into the open floor and got some easy scoring opportunities.”

Pistons at Knicks Expert Prediction

Veteran Tobias Harris scored 25 points to lead the Pistons, showing confidence after a challenging previous playoff experience. He emphasized the importance of composure and responding well in the series, saying, “It’s just one game… How you respond is one of the biggest things in this league. I’m excited to see.”

Robinson was limited to 17 regular season games while recovering from left ankle surgery, but he gives the Knicks flexibility to try different looks in the playoffs.

“There’s no doubt about it: What (Towns) can do offensively changes what you do defensively,” Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said of Towns. “He has that impact on both sides of the ball.”

In Game 1, Mikal Bridges was a significant concern for the Knicks, scoring only eight points and posting a team-worst minus-16. If his performance continues, Detroit could have an opportunity in the series. Knicks 118, Pistons 113.
