Last Season

Thet teams split last season with the game in Green Bay played on New Year’s Day and the Packers winning 41-17 in what would be Aaron Rodgers’ final win with the franchise. He threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score in the win. Keisean Nixon scored on a 105-yard kickoff return and Darnell Savage had a 75-yard pick-6 of Cousins — one of four turnovers by the Minnesota QB. Cousins went 18 of 31 for 205 yards. Through 124 meetings, which includes two postseason contests (1-1), the Packers hold a 65-57-3 edge over the Vikings in the all-time series.

Why Bet on Minnesota?

Minnesota has won three of four despite playing the past two without all-world receiver Justin Jefferson, who remains out this week injured and likely several more. On Monday, the Vikings upset the 49ers 22-17. Kirk Cousins completed 35 of 45 passes for 378 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. After a lackluster showing in his first game without Justin Jefferson (hamstring, IR) in Week 6 against the Bears, Cousins exploded for one of the best performances of his career considering the caliber of matchup. He averaged a robust 8.4 yards per attempt while displaying particularly impressive chemistry with rookie Jordan Addison and tight end T.J. Hockenson.

Cousins, the offensive line with Dalton Risner filling in for an injured Ezra Cleveland at left guard, and the offensive game plan helped keep San Francisco from recording a sack for the first time since Week 17 of the 2022 season. The Vikings secured their first home win of 2023 after falling in their first three games by three, four and seven points.

“It was a positive night, but the way I’m wired, I’m thinking about the two red zone possessions we didn’t score touchdowns,” Cousins said. “You also know the difference between walking away with a win tonight and sitting here and you lost, it isn’t much, so you try not to get too low in the losses and you realize how close you were to winning, and you try not to get too up in the wins.”

Addison brought in seven of 10 targets for 123 yards and two touchdowns. He led the Vikings receiving yards on a night where he was forced to exit the game for a time with cramping. Addison scored from 20 and 60 yards out in the first and second quarters, respectively, pushing his season touchdown total to six. TJ Hockenson brought in 11 of 12 targets for 86 yards. Despite the fact he exited the game in the second half for a time due to a foot injury, Hockenson still finished with a game- and season-high number of receptions, receiving yards and targets.

Facing a high-octane 49ers offense, Minnesota forced two takeaways and held San Francisco to a season-low in points (17) and rushing yards (65). With aid from a solid pass rush from Danielle Hunter, Dean Lowry, D.J. Wonnum, Harrison Phillips and Jonathan Bullard, the Vikes forced Brock Purdy into the first multi-interception game of his career (15th regular-season game). Monday also marked the first time Purdy has lost back-to-back games.

Why Bet on Green Bay?

The Packers lost their third in a row Sunday, 19-17 in Denver. Struggling Jordan Love completed 21 of 31 passes for 180 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed three times for 21 yards. Love hardly threw downfield during the first half, when the Packers’ offense endured yet another sluggish start, scoring no points. He eventually threw a 16-yard touchdown to Romeo Doubs and a four-yard score to Jayden Reed. While the latter play helped put Green Bay in the lead temporarily, Love subsequently threw an interception on his final pass for the second straight contest, resulting in consecutive failed attempts at game-winning drives.

However, No. 1 receiver Christian Watson appeared to injure his knee on the final drive and good-looking rookie tight end Luke Musgrave was spotted donning a walking boot on his left foot following the loss.

Defensively, while there were too many missed tackles in Denver, Coach Matt LaFleur reiterated holding the opponent to less than 20 points, as accomplished the last two games, should equate to winning. But there’s also more the defense can do to help a struggling offense.

“I still think there’s another level there in terms of our ability to find a way to generate some more takeaways,” he said. “We’ve got to eliminate those turnovers … just to set up field position to have a short field.”

Under LaFleur, the Packers are 5-3 against the Vikings (3-1 at home) and have scored 21-plus points in seven of the eight contests. Green Bay’s five wins over Minnesota since 2019 are the most in the NFL, two more than any other team over that span (Dallas Cowboys, 3-1 / Chicago Bears, 3-6). Green Bay has won the last two home games against the Vikings by 27 and 24 points.

The Packers have scored 22-plus points in 14 of the last 17 home games vs. Minnesota, including 37 in 2021 and 41 last season. Overall, the Packers have won five of the last eight meetings. The Packers are 19-7 against the NFC North since 2019, a .731 divisional winning percentage that ranks No. 2 in the NFL (Kansas City, 23-3, .885, vs. AFC West).

Green Bay is 10-3 at home against division opponents since 2019. The Packers have scored 20-plus points in 12 of those contests.
