Baltimore’s 2022 season essentially ended in a 10-9 home win over Denver in Week 13. Why? Because Jackson was hurt early in the game and wouldn’t return the rest of the season, including in the 24-17 playoff loss in Cincinnati. Jackson drew some very negative publicity for that game by not even traveling with the team to cheer on his teammates.

For a while this offseason, it sure looked like Jackson might be traded but not team really put in a concrete offer knowing that the Ravens were likely to match. In the end, Jackson signed a five-year extension worth $260 million, for an average of $52 million per year. It topped the extension signed by Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts for five years, $255 million ($51 million/year). Jackson also received $185 in total guarantees while Hurts got $179.

The Ravens signed veteran receiver Odell Beckham Jr. a few weeks prior to the extension, which seemed to please Jackson. The two connected immediately afterwards. The Eagles reached the extension with Hurts on April 17, which helped to set the parameters of the star quarterback market for Jackson.

The agreement also came shortly before the start of the NFL draft, when the Ravens could have selected a quarterback in the first round. Instead, they helped Jackson by taking Zay Flowers, the star receiver out of Boston College, at No. 22 overall, which elicited some positive reaction from Jackson on social media moments later. Jackson set career lows in 2022 with a 62.3% completion percentage and 6.9 yards per attempt, figures which were both below league average, so he needed some help.

Todd Monken is replacing Greg Roman as Baltimore’s coordinator after serving in that same capacity at the University of Georgia during back-to-back national championship seasons. The Ravens figure to pass a bit more under Monken. Since Jackson became the starter in 2018, the Ravens have gone 45-16 with him and 4-8 without him in regular-season games. Baltimore has averaged 28 points per game with him, which would rank second in the NFL during that span (compared to 17.2 points without him). The team needs him to stay healthy, which is why he probably won’t run as much.

JK Dobbins returns as the No. 1 back – good player but like Jackson is injury prone. Dobbins missed the entire 2021 season after suffering a multi-ligament injury in the team’s final preseason game. In 2022, his debut was delayed by two games; then he was on the shelf for six games after a stint on injured reserve following a cleanup surgery. On the year, he finished with 520 yards on 92 carries (5.65 yards per carry) and two touchdowns in eight games. Dobbins is one of eight members of the team’s 2023 draft class remaining on the roster that is entering the last season of their rookie deal.

Mark Andrews will again be Jackson’s favorite target through the air and is arguably the best receiving tight end in the NFL not named Travis Kelce. According to Pro Football Focus, Edwards graded out as the NFL’s sixth-best run-blocking tight end last among players with at least 200 offensive snaps. He was the team’s runaway leader in catches (73), yards (847) and receiving touchdowns (five) despite minor knee and shoulder injuries, and he led the receiving corps in catches in a range of route types, from outs to digs to deep crosses to broken plays.

The offensive line lost guard Ben Powers to free agency. Ronnie Stanley’s return in 2022 was a significant development. A full offseason of good health, for the first time in several years, should pay dividends for the former All-Pro left tackle. Tyler Linderbaum is poised to make a Year 2 jump at center. Baltimore has solid depth with the versatile Pat Mekari, who can play guard, tackle, or center, and massive Daniel Faalele (6-foot-8, 380 pounds) who was taken in the fourth round of the 2022 draft.

“One of our key missions was to build the offensive line back, and we feel excited about that and the way we were able to do that in different ways,” Ravens GM Eric DeCosta said. “We think we’re very, very close to building a championship team and everything that goes with that.”
