Cardinals at Rams Prediction, Odds and Picks in Week 6

The Arizona Cardinals again remain without starting QB Kyler Murray as they visit the Los Angeles Rams in an NFC West matchup on Sunday. The Cards also will be without their No. 1 running back in James Conner so they are solid underdogs on the NFL odds. | 2023 NFL Expert Analysis Cardinals vs Rams | MyBookie Sportsbook | NFL Regular Season: September 7, 2023 – January 7, 2024 | Week 6 NFL: Thursday, October 12 to Monday, October 16, 2023

Series History

The teams split in 2022, each winning on the road. The one in Los Angeles finished 27-17 in favor of the Cardinals. Both teams played their backup quarterbacks with starters Matthew Stafford (concussion protocol) and Kyler Murray (hamstring) sidelined by injury. Colt McCoy passed for 238 yards and James Conner rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Cards. Arizona went ahead for good on Conner’s 4-yard TD run to cap a 13-play drive in the second quarter. McCoy is gone now. Including playoffs, the Rams lead the all-time series 48-40-2.

Why Bet on Arizona?

Star QB Kyler Murray remains on injured reserve as he rehabs from a torn ACL that ended his 2022 season early. When exactly the Cardinals will activate Murray remains a huge question not simply because of the injury but also because his long-term future with the franchise is somewhat in question. A new general manager and coaching staff took over in Arizona this offseason, and they have no history with nor loyalty to Murray. The Cards could have the top pick in the 2024 draft and surely would take QB Caleb Williams.

Trade acquisition Josh Dobbs largely has played decently in Murray’s place but the team is 1-4 following Sunday’s 34-20 home loss to Cincinnati. Dobbs completed 15 of 32 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. He also gained one yard on three carries and lost a fumble. The two TDs both came in the second quarter and gave the Cardinals a 14-10 lead, but Dobbs then threw a pick-six to Cam Taylor-Britt just before halftime and Arizona never recovered. The INTs were the first of the season for Dobbs.

A knee injury that knocked No. 1 RB Conner out of Sunday’s game against the Bengals will keep him out at least another month. The Cardinals placed Conner on Injured Reserve on Tuesday, meaning he must sit a minimum of four games. Keaontay Ingram is No. 2, although he has missed the last two games with a neck injury but is expected to play Sunday. Emari Demercado, the rookie from TCU who already had been getting third-down snaps, had 10 carries for 45 yards and a touchdown against the Bengals. Demercado was signed by the Cardinals in May as an undrafted free agent after a five-year career at TCU in which he ran for 1,615 yards and 10 touchdowns on 338 carries. The Cardinals have also used wide receiver Rondale Moore in the backfield for a few snaps each game.

“I don’t think a lot changes,” offensive coordinator Drew Petzing said. “Nobody is going to fill James’ shoes perfectly.” Petzing said.

Still, it could give Dobbs more responsibility in the running game, considering he’s the team’s second-leading rusher with 142 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries.

While Petzing doesn’t want Dobbs to get hurt running the ball, he’s also not opposed to his quarterback taking off.

“Every game’s going to come up different,” Petzing said. “But, I think it’s something he does really well. I think it’s something that makes us dynamic as an offense, so I think it’s certainly something we’re going to continue to emphasize moving forward, scheme allowing it, defensively speaking.”

No. 1 WR Marquise Brown is now in some question after missing practice Wednesday with an illness. He has 25 catches (on 42 targets) for 300 yards and three touchdowns in five games. Safety Jalen Thompson left Sunday’s loss and is questionable.

Why Bet on LA Rams?

The Rams lost 23-14 on Sunday to the Eagles in WR Cooper Kupp’s season debut off injury. LA didn’t score in the second half. Kupp secured eight of 12 targets for 118 yards. The veteran led the team in targets, receptions and yards and also had the Rams’ longest play on the day, a 39-yard catch late in the second quarter that led to a Puka Nacua touchdown. The rookie sensation had a solid line of his own (7-71-1 on 11 targets).

Matthew Stafford completed 21 of 37 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Stafford didn’t show any effects from the hip injury he suffered during a Week 4 victory against the Colts, and he also managed to avoid a turnover for the second time this season. Arizona was just scorched by Joe Burrow for 317 yards and three touchdowns last Sunday so Stafford could have a big game. He ranks fourth in the NFL in passing yards, fourth in completions, and second in passing first downs (75).

RB Kyren Williams is tied for fourth in the NFL in rushing touchdowns (five) and third in yards after catch per reception (9.77). Through five games, he has 77 carries for 298 yards. Additionally, he has recorded 13 receptions for 105 yards and one receiving touchdown, totaling 403 all-purpose yards. He has had three multi-touchdown games. The Rams offense is tied for seventh in the NFL in rushing touchdowns (six).

The offenses for both of these teams rank in the top 15 in the NFL in yards per game. The Rams offense is one of the top passing offenses in the league with 1,350 total passing yards, whereas the Cardinals are one of the top rushing offenses in the league with 716 total rushing yards.

Rams star defensive tackle Aaron Donald has 16.0 career sacks against the Cardinals and the Rams have shutout the Cardinals six times. Donald (105.5) needs one sack to move into the top 30 all-time in sacks and pass Trace Armstrong (106.0) and needs two tackles for loss to move to second all-time in the NFL in tackles for loss.
