Detroit at Carolina

NFL Odds: Detroit at Carolina (-4)

Where: Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
TV / Streaming: CBS

Carolina is 0-2 this preseason after a 21-19 loss at the Giants this past Friday. No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young showed flashes and put points on the board for the first time, taking the Panthers on a 15-yard, 62-yard drive that Matthew Wright capped early in the second quarter with the first of his two field goals. “I feel like there’s always room for improvement,” Young said. “It’s about trying to keep growing day by day. So I think the more reps and more experience you get, to go up against another team, that’s a valuable experience for me, especially in this league.” Young is scheduled to start this game as well. In each of Carolina’s first two preseason games Young only handled two or three drives. Top running back Miles Sanders was back at practice early this week off a groin injury but not expected to play here. Starting kicker Eddy Pineiro is dealing with his own groin issue and hasn’t appeared in either of the team’s two preseason contests. He won’t here, either.

Detroit is 1-1 after a 25-7 home loss to Jacksonville on Saturday. New backup Teddy Bridgewater made his Lions debut, rocking a temporary jersey number instead of his longtime No. 5, which is already taken by Lions running back David Montgomery. With most of the starters out, including Jared Goff, Bridgewater was 5-of-11 for 34 yards and had a first-quarter fumble. Most of the Lions starters sat out and will do again here. Coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday that top wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown (lower leg) is “doing great” but won’t suit up for Friday’s preseason finale.

New England at Tennessee

NFL Odds: New England at Tennessee (+2)
When: Friday, August 25, 2023 at 8:15 PM ET
Where: Nissan Stadium, Nashville, TN
TV / Streaming: NFL NET

The Titans (1-1) did something unusual in their Week 2 preseason game: Played projected backup Malik Willis the entire game in a 24-16 win at Minnesota. The Titans didn’t want to risk starter Ryan Tannehill, and rookie second-round pick Will Levis was hurting. Willis rushed for 91 yards and threw a touchdown pass. Rookie Tyjae Spears had a 33-yard touchdown run, Julius Chestnut rushed for 98 yards and a score and the Titans racked up 281 yards on the ground. However, wideout Kyle Philips suffered an MCL injury and will miss time. With Treylon Burks dealing with a sprained LCL, the Titans wide receiver depth behind DeAndre Hopkins is currently taxed. The Titans signed kicker Michael Badgley on Tuesday. Caleb Shudak and Trey Wolff also had been competing for the kicking job but were waived.

New England (1-1) won at Green Bay 21-17 last weekend. The game was called in the fourth quarter due to a serious injury suffered by Pats rookie Isaiah Bolden in that quarter. He’s in the concussion protocol but should be OK overall. The Patriots were scheduled to travel directly from Green Bay to Nashville for joint practice sessions with the Titans, but due to the circumstances that led to suspending the preseason game against the Packers, the Patriots traveled back to Foxboro. Mac Jones made his preseason debut against Green Bay on Saturday, completing six of nine pass attempts for 52 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. Jones coughed up a fumble while getting sacked on the final play of his scheduled appearance, giving way to Bailey Zappe and the reserves after completing three drives. The Patriots and Titans will square off in the preseason for the first time since 2019 when the Patriots traveled to Nashville for joint practice sessions prior to a 22-17 victory on Aug. 17, 2019.

LA Chargers at San Francisco

NFL Odds: LA Chargers at San Francisco (-7.5)
When: Friday, August 25, 2023 at 10:00 PM ET
Where: Levi’s Stadium, Santa Clara, CA
TV / Streaming: NFL NET

It could be a Super Bowl 58 preview. It will mark the 50th preseason matchup between the two teams. The Chargers lead 27-22.

The Chargers (1-1) lost to the Saints 22-17 last week. WR Quentin Johnson, the 21st overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft once again looked the part, as Johnston hauled in passes of 16 and 15 yards from Easton Stick in the first half. Johnston has yet to work with Justin Herbert in a game and is not expected to play here, either. Stick completed 21 of 41 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns while adding 63 rushing yards and two touchdowns on seven carries in the loss to the Saints. The Chargers’ backup quarterback played the entire game and should play most of this game along with 2023 seventh-round pick Max Duggan as the only other QB on the roster.

The Niners (1-1) beat Denver 21-20 on Saturday. Backup QB Trey Lance shook off an interception on his first drive to set up two fourth-quarter scores, including the winning 32-yard field goal from Moody on the final play. Moody bounced back after missing two field goals last week and an extra point earlier in the game to convert the winner. Lance finished 12 for 18 for 173 yards. Starting QB Brock Purdy got his first game action since injuring his elbow in San Francisco’s NFC title game loss at Philadelphia. The Niners hoped to get Purdy 10-15 snaps against the Broncos and were able to do just that on the game’s opening drive. Purdy went 4-of-5 for 65 yards, had a scramble for 8 yards and was sacked once on a 10-play drive that ended with a field goal.
