That the Chiefs are home underdogs should tell you whether Patrick Mahomes or most other Kansas City starters will suit up. Mahomes did play the first quarter this past weekend in a 38-10 win in Arizona. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown, playing the entire first quarter. The defending Super Bowl champs never trailed and outgained the Cardinals 504 yards to 286. Kansas City rookie receiver Rashee Rice — a second-round pick out of SMU — caught eight passes for 96 yards. He has been a star of camp. No. 1 running back Isiah Pacheco shed his non-contact jersey for the first time in training camp this week, and coach Andy Reid said “there’s a chance” he suits up for his preseason debut Saturday. He’s recovering from a shoulder injury. Star defensive tackle Chris Jones is away from the team as he eyes a new contract. Jones indicated on social media that he’s willing to continue his holdout until Week 8 and that he’s willing to forfeit his weekly game check, in his case about $1.1 million dollars, because “I can afford it.”
Cleveland is 1-1-1 in this preseason after tying the Eagles 18-18 last week. Cleveland split the quarterback reps between backup contenders Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Kellen Mond. Joshua Dobbs, the frontrunner as the No. 2 to Deshaun Watson, did not play. Thompson-Robinson was 13 for 25 in the first half, and Mond was 12 for 24 for 126 yards and a TD after halftime. Those two figure to share most of the snaps again. Watson played only a single possession in his lone preseason appearance thus far, but most starters will play 20-25 snaps in the finale.

The Ravens had an NFL-record 24-game preseason winning streak end Monday in a 29-28 loss at Washington. Joey Slye converted from 49 yards out in the final seconds to lead Washington to the upset. Ravens QB Josh Johnson finished 10 of 12 for 145 yards and two touchdowns, as well as one end zone interception where the ball fell through the arms of receiver James Proche II and into the waiting hands of Commanders defensive back Quan Martin. Ravens rookie receiver Zay Flowers dominated the opening drive, catching two passes for 37 yards and his first NFL touchdown. Flowers had 21.8 yards after the catch on his 26-yard touchdown reception. Last season, the Ravens wide receivers ranked 29th in YAC with 551, although they were 11th in yards after the catch per reception (4.4).
The Bucs have named Baker Mayfield as the Week 1 starting quarterback over Kyle Trask. Coach Todd Bowles previously had said both would play in the finale but that was before naming a winner. Whether that changes Bowles’ plans isn’t clear yet. Trask played nearly the whole game in Week 2 after third-stringer John Wolford got hurt and probably will do so again. The Buccaneers also made a decision regarding one other head-to-head competition, as they waived kicker Rodrigo Blankenship on Monday. That leaves Chase McLaughlin as the only place-kicker on the roster. Second-year player Cade Otton had been listed as the starter in the single tight end position but now he’s joined in the listed starting 11 by fellow 2022 draftee Ko Kieft.

This might be an AFC playoff preview after both made it last season. The Jags are 2-0 in this preseason and won both of those games on the road. The Jacksonville starters are expected to play a fair amount on Saturday. “I’m still in the same mindset,” coach Doug Pederson said of the injury risk. “I can’t really worry too much about who gets hurt and this and that. If I do, then people get hurt. I just think you practice and play just like you’re getting ready for a regular-season game and our starters need some time together on the field. They’ll get that opportunity this week, and I’ll monitor it. I’ll be on top of that too, so if I need to pull them out, I’ll pull them out. Right now, it’s still full steam ahead. You can’t substitute game reps and the feeling of a little bit of pressure and heat from execution.”. The Jaguars have a 1,000-yard rusher in Travis Etienne Jr. but drafted Tank Bigsby in the third round. After an impressive spring and start to training camp, it looks like Bigsby might have earned a bigger role in the offense.
Miami is quite banged up but avoided potential disaster on third-round rookie RB De’Von Achane, who is considered “week-to-week” after leaving Saturday’s preseason win over the Houston Texans with a shoulder injury. Backup QB Mike White was also injured in Saturday’s game, McDaniel said, and is in the concussion protocol. White suffered the injury while filling in for Skylar Thompson, who at the time was being evaluated for a concussion on the sideline. White did return to practice this week so maybe he can play. Star wideout Jaylen Waddle hasn’t played in the preseason due to injury and will not.
