2024 Iowa Hawkeyes Football Team | 135th Season of the NCAA gridiron action | 26th season of Kirk Ferentz Head Coach
Big Ten Conference
2023 Record: 10–4 (7–2 Big Ten)

Betting 2024 Iowa Hawkeyes Season

Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes will start the 2024 season fresh off a 10 win season.

The Hawkeyes were one of the oddest teams in the country, as they struggled to score all season, but played in the Big Ten title game, and also in the Citrus Bowl.

Neither went well for the Hawkeyes, as they did not score in either, losing a combined 6-10.

They finished the season 10-4, and just inside the Top 25.

In 2024, the Iowa Hawkeyes will have some new looks.

Cade McNamara is projected to be the starting quarterback.

Leshon Williams will get the carries to start the season, while Kaleb Brown and Seth Anderson are the top receivers.

One of the best tight ends in the nation will wear 85 for the Hawkeyes, as Luke Lachey will play his final season with the Hawkeyes.

Writer’s Picks for Iowa 2024 Season

Win Total in 2024: 8.5

The Iowa Hawkeyes start the season at home against Illinois State.

While the Redbirds should not be able to beat the Hawkeyes, they are a team that will force Iowa to focus a little.

Iowa should win their first game of the NCAAF season.

Week 2

Week two stays at home, and that’s a big deal in this game.

They will take on Iowa State in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk game.

The home team typically has an advantage in this game.

Iowa should be favored to beat the Cyclones.

In September, a third straight home game will take place.

The Troy Trojans come to town.

Week 4

Week four is where the Hawkeyes start to go on the road.

The first Big Ten game of the season is at Minnesota.

After a week off, Iowa will remain on the road and take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Ohio State is not only one of the favorites to win the Big Ten, but also a national title contender.

October Games

October 12th does not get a ton easier, as defending national runner up Washington comes to town.

The Huskies will be down, but will still bring plenty of firepower into Iowa City.

The final two games in October feature a road trip to Michigan State.

The Spartans are projected by many to be one of the worst teams in the Big Ten.

The final October game is at home, in a homecoming battle against Northwestern.

November Games

When November arrives, the final four games of the season will be interesting.

November 2nd, the Hawkeyes are at home against Wisconsin in the annual black out game.

They then have a short turn around, and need to get to Pasadena to take on UCLA on Friday night.

After a week off, the Hawkeyes go to College Park Maryland to take on the Terrapins.

Final Home Game

The final game is at home against Nebraska.

The Cornhuskers are projected by many as a dark horse to contend for the Big Ten title game.

Are there 9 wins here?

Very good chance, they will be favorites in 9 of those games.

Can they win them all?

That’s the next question.

Can Iowa get to the Big Ten title game for another chance at a win?

What bowl game will they be looking at.

8.5 is a great number, and if we had to side one way or another, we would take the UNDER and settle at 8 wins.

Odds to Make College Football Playoff: +650

When odds are listed to reach the College Football playoff, there are nearly 25 teams listed ahead of the Iowa Hawkeyes.

It appears it will be a large climb for Iowa to get there.

Even with 12 teams making it, many of the teams listed ahead are the Iowa Hawkeyes.

But, if you are feeling the Ferentz magic, and McNamara coming in and changing the offense in big time ways, +650 are pretty valuable odds for the Hawkeyes.

College Football Playoff: Consider

Odds to Win Big Ten title game +3300

The folks in Iowa City would be ecstatic to get to the Big Ten title game again.

Last season was not much fun for them once they got to Indianapolis.

The Michigan Wolverines made quick and easy work of them.

This season, it could be Michigan, it could be Ohio State, it could be Oregon.

Whoever is the opponent in the Big Ten title game, is likely going to be looking at a national title opportunity following the game.

The Hawkeyes have long odds, as they are listed at 33/1 to win the Big Ten title game.

Win Big Ten: No

Odds to Win National Championship: +25000

NCAA Football Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Tips for the Upcoming 2022 Season

Previous Betting News

Every season in college football, we always see a few teams who overachieve and do things that nobody expected. With a 10-win season, the Iowa Hawkeyes certainly fell into that category. All the more astonishing was that they were able to get to that total with an offense that did not do a lot of things very well. The defense deserves a ton of the credit for a great season, but will they be able to deliver the good again this year without some help from the offense. That is just one of many questions that needs to be answered for this team, and you have to say that the bookies are not on board with the idea of the Hawkeyes having an encore performance, as they have their 2022 season win total set at 7 ½. Will they surprise everyone again, or will this be a season where they take a backward step? Let’s look and see so you can plan your bets against their NCAA Football Betting Lines.

Iowa 2022 NCAA Football Season Betting Guide

Hawkeyes Regular Season Win Total

Last season, the Hawkeyes came flying out the gate, winning their first 6 games of the year, 3 of which were against ranked opponents. It was a surprise, but it was one that caught up with them, with back-to-back losses to Purdue and Wisconsin coming on the heels of that fast start. This season, they have a chance to get off to another good start before getting into what is a brutal schedule. Those first 4 games are against South Dakota State, Iowa State, Nevada, and Rutgers. After that comes Michigan, who destroyed the Hawkeyes in the Conference Championship Game last season. They are then on the road to Illinois and Ohio State, at which point we could start to see the losses piling up.

The rest of the way, they have home games against Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Nebraska, as well as a pair of road games against Purdue and Minnesota.

From Week 5 onwards, things get really tough for the Hawkeyes, and the reality is that I do not expect lightning to strike twice. This is a team that looks set to win 7 or 8 games, which is why that win total set by the bookies is almost perfect. This really could go either way for the Hawkeyes and I am leaning toward the under until I get a better look at that offense.

Big Ten Conference Odds

The Iowa Hawkeyes have the benefit of being in the weaker of the two divisions in the Big Ten, but with games against Michigan and Ohio coming this season, you imagine that they would need to win all their other conference games if they are to make a return to the Conference Championship Game. The bookies seem to agree with me here, as they have the Hawkeyes in at +1775 to win the conference. Even if they do find a way to repeat and win the West, I still think they would be looking at a similar outcome to what happened last season when they were shelled by the Wolverines. I don’t like Iowa to win their division, never mind the conference.

2022 College Football Season: Iowa Hawkeyes Betting Guide and Odds Analysis

Previous Betting News

Last year was a bit of a surprising one in the Big Ten, as we failed to see the Ohio State Buckeyes perform at their best. That opened a door for the Michigan Wolverines to win their division, while the Iowa Hawkeyes won the other. It was, in the grand scheme of things, a good season for Iowa, as they ended the year with 10 wins, although they closed the season out with losses to Michigan in the Conference Championship Game and to Kentucky in their bowl game. If we are being honest, it was the Hawkeyes defense that helped them excel last season, and they are going to need to do the same again this year with what looks to be a tougher schedule. The bookies seem to agree, as they have the Iowa win total for 2022 set at 7 ½. Let’s take a look at all the College Football Betting Lines for the Hawkeyes this season.

Iowa Hawkeyes 2022 Season Guide to Help You Wager On their Odds | NCAA Football Betting

Hawkeyes Regular Season Win Total

If the Hawkeyes are to match what they did last season, they will need to get off to a similar start as they had in 2021, where they came out and won their first 6 games before losing 2 in a row. With home games against South Dakota State, Iowa State, and Nevada to start the season, the Hawkeyes have the opportunity to get out to another fast start. They then have a road trip to Rutgers, another winnable one, before going on a brutal stretch versus Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio State. This is a stretch of games that will define their season, as Iowa could find themselves in a losing skid when all is said and done.

The final stretch of games in the 2022 season will see Iowa host Northwestern, followed by games against Purdue and Wisconsin, a pair of teams that they lost to last year. They will then end the year on the road to Minnesota and at home to Nebraska.

I am absolutely not sold on the Iowa offense this year, which could well prove to be a problem. They also have a tougher schedule that what they had last year, with 7 or 8 wins looking the most likely outcome. Right now, I am leaning toward the UNDER 7 ½ wins for the Iowa Hawkeyes this season.

Big Ten Conference Odds

Last season, when the Hawkeyes manage to hot double-digit wins, they did so without having to face either Michigan or Ohio State in the regular season. Yes, they play in the weaker of the two divisions in the Big Ten, but losses to teams from the other division still count in the conference standings, which I think creates some problems for Iowa this season. As it stands at the moment, the Hawkeyes are sitting at +1700 to win the Big Ten, so you have to say that they are drifting into longshot territory there. I don’t see this team making a return to the Big Ten Conference Championship Game, and I certainly don’t see them in the playoff conversation. The Hawkeyes are currently at +9500 to win the National Championship.

Iowa Hawkeyes 2019 College Football Season Betting Guide

Previous Betting News

After coming up just short of reaching the coveted double-digit win mark a year ago, the Iowa Hawkeyes will be looking to take another step forward in 2019 to challenge for both, the Big Ten West title and hopefully, the Big Ten Conference championship as well. If you’re looking to find out just how the Hawkeyes are going to make out this coming season, then you’re going to love the expert information you’re going to get in this 2019 college football betting guide centered on Iowa’s upcoming campaign.

Iowa Hawkeyes 2019 College Football Season Betting Guide

2020 National Championship Odds: +12500
2019 Win Total Odds:

Betting Statistics

ATS: 9-4 (W-L) / 8-5-0 (ATS) / 5-3-0 (Home) / 3-2-0 (Away) / 1-2-0 (Grass) / 7-3-0 (Turf)
O/U: 9-4-0 (W-L) / 4-4-0 (Home) / 5-0-0 (Away) / 3-0-0 (Grass) / 6-4-0 (Turf) / 48.9 (Total)

Not only did Iowa win nine games in 2018, they were also a good bet to cash in against their college football betting odds as they finished the season with a fine 8-5 ATS mark that included five covers at home and three on the road. Not only that, but the Hawkeyes also went 9-4 against their Over/Under total odds, including a perfect 5-0 O/U mark on the road.

Iowa got an eye-opening inaugural debut from freshman running back Mekhi Sargent after he scored a team-high 10 touchdowns while rushing for a team-high 745 yards and 4.7 yards per carry. Junior quarterback Nate Stanley led the team in passing with 2,582 yards while throwing 26 TD passes and 10 interceptions. Tight end T.J. Hockenson recorded a team-high 760 receiving yards while senior defensive back Jake Gervase racked up a team-high four interceptions. While Sargent and Stanley return in 2019, both Hockenson and Gervase are gone.

The Hawkeyes were solid, but not necessarily explosive offensively last season in ranking 92nd overall, 73rd in passing, 95th in rushing and a decent 44th in scoring (31.2 ppg).

While Iowa was solid on offense a year ago, they were mostly outstanding on the other side of the ball in ranking a stellar seventh in total defense, 17th against the pass, 12th against the run and 11th in points allowed (17.8 ppg).

Outlook

While there are some changes taking place with Iowa’s roster from a year ago, the Hawkeyes look like they’re still going to be pretty dominant on defense this coming season under widely-respected head coach Kirk Ferentz. Junior defensive end A.J. Epenesa is probably the best pass rusher in the Big Ten while junior defensive end Chauncey Golston has star potential as well. Ferentz also has plenty of experience returning at linebacker and in the secondary, so you should expect the Hawkeyes solid defense from a year ago to be stout again this coming season.

On the offensive side of the ball, quarterback Nate Stanley is pretty darned good even if he doesn’t get the same amount of national attention as some other quarterbacks. Stanley will be throwing the rock to a pair of experienced receivers in juniors Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Brandon Smith and Iowa’s top three running backs from last season also return. Last but certainly not least, the Hawkeyes have a pair of future NFL performers in junior starting tackles Alaric Jackson and Tristan Wirfs.

The bad news is that Iowa lost a pair of supremely talented tight ends in T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant who went eighth and 20th in this year’s NFL Draft respectively. The pair combined to catch 27 of Stanley’s 52 scoring strikes the last two seasons and they will definitely be sorely missed.

Last but not least, Iowa also has a daunting 2019 schedule that includes tricky road dates at in-state rival Iowa State, Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Nebraska and a tough home date against Throw in a pair of tough home dates against two teams they lost two last season (Purdue and Penn State) and I believe the best result the Hawkeyes could be hoping for is eight wins at best and possibly a modest seven victories.
