This is almost certainly a gut play, but if there is a team that is due for a break, it is the Auburn Tigers. Bruce Pearl’s club has won just three of their last eleven games and is steadily playing their way into a sweaty selection Sunday if they aren’t able to prove that they belong. The Tigers were once 16-3 (6-1) but now sit at 19-11 (9-8).

So why pick the Tigers in this spot? The first reason is that Auburn has won three of their last five games at home. The Tigers are also 6-4 against the spread following a loss on the season and outperforming the number by +4.3 points per contest in that instance. As an underdog, Auburn is a respectable 3-3 ATS though they are underperforming the number by nearly four points per game in that situation.

The largest reason to fade Tennessee right now is obviously due to the loss of their star guard Zakai Zeigler. The defensive player of the year candidate was lost to a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season. Ziegler is a spark plug on the offensive end of the court with a penchant for getting to the rim, but his true gift is shooting gaps and picking pockets, creating easy opportunities on the break.

Bruce Pearl is already playing without Tyreke Key, who has missed consecutive games, and Josiah Jordan James has been banged up all season long. Despite having won two consecutive games, the Vols have lost five of their last nine games straight up. Tennessee is also one of the worst teams in the SEC against the spread on the road, with a record of just 3-6 on the season. Their margin of victory in true road games this season is just 4.8, which is more than ten points fewer than their season average.

St. John’s Red Storm at Marquette Golden Eagles (-11.5)

St. John’s vs Marquette Game Info | Updated NCAAB Odds
When: Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 2:00 pm ET
Where: Fiserv Forum, Milwaukee, WI
TV / Streaming: FOX

It is sometimes difficult to put a ton of faith in a team whose fate is already sealed, but Marquette has not disappointed us on many occasions so far this season. The Golden Eagles are 15-1 straight up on their home floor this season and 9-7 against the spread within the friendly confines. They have the top seed in the Big East Tournament wrapped up, but their NCAA seeding could take a hit with a bad loss in the season finale.

St. Johns is a talented team but has not performed up to snuff this season. On the road, they are just 4-6 against the spread The Red Storm are underperforming the number by -2.4 points per contest on the road this season and have a margin of victory of an atrocious -7.7 points in that situation. The Johnnies run the fastest tempo in the nation, but their offensive efficiency is horrendous, and they are not a good shooting team ranking 232nd in the nation in effective field goal percentage. It wouldn’t be shocking to see the Golden Eagles end the season with a victory exceeding twenty points.
