Grade 3 Sycamore Stakes
1 ½ miles turf – 3 year olds and up
Saturday, October 12th, 2024
Keeneland Race Course
The top last out performance in this Friday’s Sycamore comes from Brian Lynch trainee Highway Robber, which finished second in the Kentucky Cup Classic.
Highway Robber is the 9/2 second choice.
Ohana Honor, trained by Shug McGaughey and which finished second in the Grade 2 Bowling Green in the last, is the second choice at 7/2.
The morning line chalk is Charlie Appleby trained Bold Act.
The Godolphin runner hopes to use the Sycamore as a springboard to the BC Turf on Nov 2.
Other entrants include Sugoi, Big Blue Line, and the always dangerous Tawny Port.
Grade 1 QE II Challenge Cup
1 1/8 miles – 3 year old fillies
Saturday, October 12th, 2024
Keeneland Race Course
The weekend’s highest graded race pits 3 year old filly turf stars against each other over the lawn at Keeneland.
She Feels Pretty, the Cherie De Vaux trainee, should break from the gate the favorite.
Soprano and Candala will attract action.
Chad Brown has a runner with a chance in 6/1 morning line Oversubscribed.
Pin Up Betty, Pounce, and Buchu are longshots that can race into the top four.
Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes
1 1/6 miles turf – 3 year olds
Saturday, October 12th, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack
Some of the best trainers on the East Coast will saddle horses for the Grade 2 Sands Point.
Richard Dutrow plans on running Macanga, Linda Rice has entered Just Music, and Danny Gargan has a runner in Just Deny.
Todd Pletcher will race two, Audacious and Courbe.
Cristophe Clement trained Style Points won the Virginia Derby in the last.
Marc Casse horse Mo Fox Givin won the Dueling Grounds.
All runners could finish behind the two Chad Brown entrants, Shade of Pale and Spaliday.
Grade 2 Franklin Stakes
5 ½ furlongs turf – 3 year old fillies and up
Sunday, October 13th, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack
No doubt that Charles Appleby trained and Godolphin campaigned Star of Mystery is going to go off the favorite in the Franklin Stakes.
If you’re looking to beat Star of Mystery, consider backing Cristophe Clement trained Roses for Debra or Clement’s other runner, Dontlookbackatall.
Kairyu, Elm Drive, and Awesome Treat can have a say in the outcome.
This is a turf spring, which means the race will be wide open once they break from the gate and the smallest amount adversity can lead to failure.
Grade 3 Knickerbocker Stakes
1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year olds and up
Sunday, October 13th, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack
If it’s a turf race on the East Coast, Chad Brown is going to have multiple runners in the starting gate.
Brown entered Andthewinneris and Redistricting in this Sunday’s Knickerbocker.

Grade 1 Champagne Stakes
1 mile dirt – 2 year olds
Saturday, October 5th, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack
Chad Brown projects to put the saddle on the favorite, Chancer McPatrick.
The McKinzie sired colt won the Grade 1 Hopeful in the last and will be the chalk to take the Champagne.
Todd Pletcher trained last out maiden winners Uncaged and Tip Top Thomas will attract action.
Joel Rosario rides Uncages and Irad Ortiz steps aboard Tip Top Thomas.
Both have a chance to prance into the winner’s circle.
J J Zo Zo, Lethal Speed, Mo Plex, and Vekoma Rides may offer overlay odds to win.
All four have chances to at least hit the board.
Grade 1 First Lady Stakes
1 mile turf – 3 year old fillies and up
Saturday, October 5th, 2024
Keeneland Race Course
Chad Brown will saddle four in the First Lady.
The one with the best chance appears to be White Beam, the Grade 1 Diana winner.
If White Beam can make a trip from post 11, she’ll be tough to beat.
Brown’s other runner, Fluffy Socks, Gina Romantica, and Chili Flag have back class.
All three can win on their best day.
Don’t discount any of Chad’s runners in this.
Special Wan, Tarawa, and Safeen are the top challengers to the Brown contingent.
Special Wan, trained by Brendan Walsh, could improve off the third place finish in the Grade 3 Brownstone Stakes in the last.
Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity
1 1/16 miles dirt – 2 year olds
Saturday, October 5th, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack
Gustavo Delgado trained Ferocious finished second in the Hopeful in the last.
The Flatter sired Ferocious so the stretch out won’t be an issue.
Breaking from the rail gives Ferocious an advantage.
Saratoga Cruiser and Optical are a couple that could surprise.
Trainer Keith Desormeaux takes his time with 2 year olds.
So the fact Optical broke the maiden in the fourth start means Keith has his colt where he wants him.
Handsome Pants and East Avenue could have a say in the outcome.
The horse that could surprise and might take as much action as Ferocious is Todd Pletcher trained Tenacious Leader.
The Pletcher runner finished second in the Grade 3 With Anticipation in the last.
Most expect Tenacious Leader to improve off the effort.
Grade 1 Turf Mile
1 mile turf – 3 year olds and up
Saturday, October 5th, 2024
Aqueduct Racetrack
Aidan O’Brien preps Mountain Bear in this for the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
Mountain Bear drew post 1, which means Chris Hayes should save a ton of ground before pulling out for the stretch drive.
Once again, Chad Brown is looking to finish 1-2-3 in a Grade 1 turf event.
Brown saddles likely chalk Carl Spackler, the Fourstardave winner, Spirit of St. Louis can Running Be.
Todd Pletcher puts the saddle on Talk of the Nation.
Saffie Joseph Jr. has a contender in Cash Equity.
The Joseph Jr. runner might offer overlay odds.
Take a long look at Cash Equity before writing off that one’s chances.
Grade 1 American Pharoah
1 1/16 miles dirt – 2 year olds
Saturday, October 5th, 2024
Santa Anita Park
Bob Baffert puts the bridle on three of the seven runners in this Saturday’s Grade 1 American Pharoah.
The race, named after the 2015 Triple Crown winner and Baffert trained monster, is the key 2 year old prep for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.
Baffert’s top entrant could be Emerald Bay, the last out maiden winner.
Getaway Car and Citizen Bull are Bob’s other two runners.
McKinzie Street will attract some action.
Start Mo Up, Mischief River, and Show of Force will offer massive odds.
So if you can make a case for any of those three runners, do it because the potential payouts will be huge.

Pletcher loves to unleash his 2 year olds this time of the year. No wonder Todd should saddle the favorite in the Champagne. Fierceness broke the maiden in the first lifetime race. The Pletcher trained colt should go off the chalk followed by Chad Brown’s General Partners.
Hoping for a bounce back performance, some horseplayers will back Steve Asmussen trained Gold Sweep. The talented 2 year old finished sixth in the Grade 1 Hopeful in the last.
Nutella Fella, Dancing Groom, El Grande O, and Sweet Soddy J should also run.

If Bold Act doesn’t go off the chalk, Highest Honor or Tawny Port will. Highest Honor is a Chad Brown trained runner while Tawny Port hails from the Cristophe Clement barn. Clement doesn’t run his horses unless he believes he can win.
Others expected to break from the gate include veterans Red Knight, Therapist, and Channel Maker. Channel Maker, if allowed to get an easy lead, is a gate to wire threat.

Mawj should fight Elusive Princess for the most money. The Godolphin runner isn’t proven stateside but did win the Grade 1 English 1000 Guineas. Other projected runners include Mission of Joy, Safine, Be Your Best, if that one doesn’t go in the Sands Point, Sounds of Heaven, and Lindy.

Chad Brown plans on entering Rockemperor. The Holy Roman sired runner finished second in the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes in the last. Rockemperor should go off either first or second.
The Knickerbocker, though, is a deep race. Although Rockemperor will be one of the choices, don’t settle on the projected chalk unless you really believe the Brown runner shows its best.
Other contenders include Wicked Finn, second in the listed stakes Red Bank, the horse that finished ahead of Wicked Finn, Neil Drysdale trained St Anthony, and King Cause, a Mike Maker trained runner that struggled in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf.
Commander, Siege of Boston, and Master Piece all have chances. Richard Dutrow Jr. trains Master Piece. Dutrow recently came back from a decade long suspension. The trainer has been winning at a decent clip since the return. So if Master Piece offers overlay odds, consider.

No doubt, Steve Asmussen trained Jaxon Traveler will go off the chalk. The 4-year-old Munnings sired sprinter finished second in the Lite the Fuse Stakes in his last.
Eastern Bay, Silk Trade, from the Norm Casse barn, and Drafted are also probable. So is Factor It In, Meraas, and Mucho.
Santa Anita | Saturday, Oct. 29
Grade 3 Autumn Miss – 1 mile turf – 3 year old fillies
The Autumn Miss projects as one of this weekend’s most competitive stakes events. 13 runners are probable, including five from the Phil D’Amato barn: Sixteen Arches, Rhea Moon, Kitty Kitana, Island of Love, and Helen’s Well.
Peter Miller goes with Pammy’s Ready and legendary trainer Neil Drysdale will saddle Nanette. With so much talent in the Grade 2 Autumn Miss, horseplayers can’t settle on a short price for the win slot.
Grade 2 Twilight Derby – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year olds
Like the Autumn Miss, the Twilight Derby could attract an overflow field of 13 runners. Richard Mandella trained Sumter may be the one to beat.
Peter Miller shows 2 possible runners, Perfect Flight and Handy Dandy. War At Sea from the Ron Ellis barn and Graham Motion trained Speaking Scout will also attract action.
Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes – 1 mile turf – 3 year old fillies and up
At the time of this writing, only 8 runners are probable for the Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes. Of the 8, Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Handicap winner Going Global figures to vie for favoritism.
Going Global won this race last year. So she could be tough to beat. Counterparty Risk, Cairo Memories, Burgoo Alley, and Avenue de France should also enter the starting gate.
Churchill Downs | Sunday, Oct. 30
Grade 3 Street Sense – 1 1/16 miles dirt – 2 year olds
Youngsters step onto the dirt under the Twin Spires on Sunday for the Grade 3 Street Sense Stakes. At least 6 runners will race the 1 1/16 miles.
Wayne Lukas saddles Western Ghent. Red Route One goes for top trainer Steve Asmussen and Mike Maker is likely to enter Top Recruit.
Trainer Kenny McPeek plans on running a couple of horses, Frosted Departure and Hones. George Leonard will put the saddle on King Ice. Since these are 2 year olds, the race should be wide open. So don’t settle on a short price.
I have read enough, I need to place my bet now. What to do?

Like on most race days, Churchill’s Thursday card presents plenty of opportunities. Race 6 and Race 8 are especially attractive. One is a high-level turf allowance. The other is a high-level dirt allowance. We handicap and makes picks for both those events as well as Race 7, a $50,000 claiming 7 furlong dirt dash. Weather: Mostly Sunny
Temperature: High 86 – Low 60
Churchill Downs Picks for Thursday, June 11
Race 6 – 3:42 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Turf – $81,000 Allowance
Please Call Me Back has a big chance to upset the two chalks, Vintage Print and Fancy Liquor. The Eddie Kenneally trained runner gets Lasix for the first time, comes over from Gulfstream and gets Corey Lanerie to ride. Kenneally has won 2-of-5 with first time Lasix. Eddie also wins 19% with shippers and 18% with runners going first time for him.
Even though Chad Brown trains Vintage Print, the Curlin sired 3-year-old might keep his 2/1 morning line odds. Vintage Print broke his maiden in his last race. The win was only by three-quarters of a length, though. Also, Fancy Liquor should get plenty of attention. Let’s cross our fingers and hope Print doesn’t fall further than 8/5.
Mike Maker trained Fancy Liquor broke his maiden at first asking. Then, in his first against winners, the Lookin At Lucky sired colt finished third in a Grade 3 at Turfway Park. Jockey Florent Geroux figures to try and steal this on the front end. Florent can do it if nobody goes with his horse.
Win: Please Call Me Back
Place: Vintage Print
Show: Fancy Liquor
Race 7 – 4:14 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Dirt – $50,000 Claiming
There doesn’t appear to be a ton of speed in this, which is why Wayne Catalano trained Hidden Talent could take the lead and never look back. A 4-year-old sired by Giant’s Causeway, Hidden Talent breaks from post-position 1. That helps. What also helps is having Tyler Gaffalione on his back. A fantastic work on June 3, 4 furlongs in 47.2, the best of 32 at the distance, shows intent to grab the lead and go.
Brad Cox trained Golden Notion figures to offer underlay odds to get his picture taken. Cox wins 26% with horses running off a maiden score. Not only that but the Goldencents sired colt broke the maiden on this dirt and at this distance. Notion is the one to beat.
Soaring Bird should get into the trifecta. The gelding’s best races have been at a sprint. Also, Bird takes a drop in class from allowance company.
Win: Hidden Talent
Place: Golden Notion
Show: Soaring Bird
Race 8 – 4:46 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt – $75,000 Allowance Optional Claiming
In her first versus winners, Steve Asmussen trained Seattle Slang didn’t run that badly. The Tapit sired miss finished third by 5 ½ lengths. She should improve off that run while Asmussen wins 26% with last out beaten favorites.
Velvet Crush is another Tapit sired runner with a shot. Trainer Rodolphe Brisset gets 30% winners going sprint to route. Crush broke its maiden going 7 furlongs and then failed in a 6 ½ furlong sprint at Gulfstream. In her lone try over Churchill’s dirt, she finished second in a $95,000 maiden special weight at a mile.
Brisset has another contender in Aurelia Grand. The Constitution sired 3-year-old filly breaks form the rail. Grand won her first race and then finished third in the event after the maiden score. She can win this. Consider for all slots in your exotics.
Win: Seattle Slang
Place: Velvet Crush
Show: Aurelia Grand

Weather: Chance of Rain Showers
Temperature: High 75 – Low 62
Belmont Park Picks for Thursday, June 11
Race 6 – 3:59 pm ET – 7 Furlongs Turf – $35,000 Claiming
Teletype returns to the turf after 4 straight on the dirt. Now trained by A.C. Avila, she failed big time in her first for him. She should improve returning to the sod, though. Teletype has a win and second from 7 over the grass. Also, this race is wide-open. So, why not back a 10/1 shot to get it done?
Louis Linder trained Wings of Fury cuts back in distance from a mile to this 7 furlong sprint. Fury has 2 wins and a second from 4 races over the grass. Linder wins 15% with horses running first time for him. Consider this one a contender for the win spot.
David Donk trains 6/5 morning line chalk Merlin’s Muse. Because Johnny V. rides, Muse figures to go off close to even money if not 4/5. The Cape Blanco sired 5-year-old mare can win this. But the expected odds won’t justify a bet on the nose for a runner that has just 2 victories from 13 over the grass and 1 win from 8 races over Belmont’s sod.
Win: Teletype
Place: Wings of Fury
Show: Merlin’s Muse
Race 7 – 4:32 pm ET – 1 1/16 Miles Dirt –$56,000 Allowance
Trainer Jonathan Thomas saddles an overlay contender in Beg to Differ. Sure, the 3-year-old gelding heads into this off a maiden win. But, wow, what a way to break the maiden! Beg to Differ dominated by 6 ½ lengths. Thomas wins 29% with horses running off a layoff, 24% with last-out maiden winners, and 25% with horses going a route of ground. Also, Beg to Differ figures to hold the 8/1 morning line.
Danny California is another horse offering overlay odds to win. Trainer Orlando Noda wins 33% second off a layoff. Danny failed as a less than 3/1 choice in its last. The 5-year-old gelding should improve off that run. Also, this is the second time Joel Rosario gets to ride Danny California.
Horseplayers figure to pound Chestertown. The Steve Asmussen trained runner failed big time in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. This is an easier spot, but Chestertown has yet to run as fast as either Danny California or Beg to Differ. Maybe, the even money morning line chalk isn’t as good as advertised. We’ll relegate to the bottom of our exotics.
Win: Beg to Differ
Place: Danny California
Show: Chestertown
Race 9 – 5:36 pm ET – 1 3/8 Miles Dirt – $80,000 Flat Out Stakes
Rocketry could dominate this field. The 6-year-old horse has 5 wins, 5 seconds, and 3 thirds from 22 races. At Belmont, Rocketry has a win and 2 seconds from 5 races. In the top choices lone try at this distance, Rocketry finished second. The James Jerkens trained equine is a proven runner that, if he shows his best, should take the Flat Out Stakes on Thursday.
7-year-old gelding Adventist looks like a real player to take the Flat Out Stakes. Adventist won the $100,000 Bernardini Stakes at 1 5/16 miles in its last. Trainer Uriah St. Lewis has put some great works into the Any Given Saturday sired runner, including bullet moves on May 27 and June 3.
2018 Belmont Stakes winner Sir Winston should relish the distance. Winston hasn’t raced since winning an $80,000 optional claimer at a mile at Aqueduct in January. The Belmont winner is talented. But how much has he improved since the last race? Not only that, the odds figure to make it impossible to back this one to win. Still, we can’t leave off the trifecta ticket.
Win: Rocketry
Place: Adventist
Show: Sir Winston

Keeneland
Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $150,000
2-year-old fillies hit the Keeneland lawn for the Jessamine Stakes on Wednesday. Brad Cox trained Aunt Pearl broke her maiden in fine fashion and figures to go off one of the chalks. So will the Mike Maker trained Gambling Cat, another last-out maiden winner.
Saturday, Oct. 10 Horse Races
Belmont Park
Grade 1 Frizette Stakes – 1 mile dirt – $250,000
Grade 1 Champagne Stakes – 1 mile dirt – $250,000
Grade 1 Flower Bowl – 1 ¼ miles turf – $250,000
Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup – 1 ¼ miles dirt – $250,000
Second-place in the Del Mar Debutante in her last, Forest Caraway figures to go off one of the favorites to win the Frizette on Saturday. Horseplayers must also pay attention to the Todd Pletcher trained Fifth Risk. The Outwork sired filly broke her maiden at first asking. Not only that, but Pletcher is fantastic with 2-year-old fillies.
In the Champagne, Steve Asmussen trained runners Midnight Bourbon and Jackie’s Warrior will attempt to beat one of the top 2-year-old colts in training, Reinvestment Risk. The Chad Brown, Klaravich Stables owned runner, finished second behind Jackie’s Warrior in the Grade 1 Hopeful. Jackie will go off the chalk, but Reinvestment Risk should be a co-favorite. The Brown runner can turn the tables on Asmussen’s charge.
Sistercharlie, Cambier Parc, and Civil Union are three of the top contenders in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl. The annual turf race at Belmont always produces one of the top contenders for the BC Filly & Mare Turf. Civil Union has won three in a row and could challenge Sistercharlie for favoritism on Saturday.
Tacitus could offer even money odds if he runs in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. What horse can beat the Bill Mott trained son of Tapit? Maybe, no horse. Todd Pletcher will run 3-year-old Happy Saver in the Jockey Gold Cup. Saver has improved race to race, but he must take a big step forward to beat Tacitus.
Keeneland Racecourse
Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup – 1 1/8 miles turf – $500,000
Later this week we’ll get a better idea of what horses will go in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. Last year, Cambier Parc won the race. She’s running in the Flower Bowl at Belmont on Oct. 10. Cayenne Pepper, One Voice, and Magic Attitude should enter the starting gate. They’ll be joined by at least one Aidan O’Brien runner from Ballydoyle in Ireland.
Have a great week!

Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes – 1 mile turf – $150,000
Grade 2 Knickerbocker – 1 mile turf – $150,000
No matter who else shows up for the Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes on Monday, expect Cristophe Clement trained Decorated Invader to offer even money odds or worse. Invader finished fifth in the Saratoga Derby in his last. Before that, he had won three in a row.
Trainer Chad Brown figures to have a couple of horses in the Grade 2 Knickerbocker. Both Almanaar and Olympico look strong. Corelli, En Wye Cee, and Breaking the Rules are also contenders.
Saturday, Oct. 17 Horse Races
Santa Anita Park
Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes – 1 mile turf – $100,000
Some of the better 3-year-old fillies in the nation will take to the Great Race Place’s lawn on Saturday for the 1 mile Autumn Miss Stakes. The best 3-year-old fillies ran in this past weekend’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup. That doesn’t mean horse racing handicappers shouldn’t take a look at the Autumn Miss, what’s sure to be one of the most competitive stakes races on Saturday.
Keeneland Racecourse
Grade 2 Raven Run Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – $200,000
Pay attention to which horse wins the Grade 2 Raven Run on Saturday. It’s the final sprint prep for both the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile.
Sunday, Oct. 18 Horse Races
Santa Anita Park
Grade 2 Twilight Derby – 1 1/8 miles turf – $200,000
Top 3-year-old turf runners hit the grass at Santa Anita for the Grade 2 Twilight Derby on Sunday. Past winners include Sharp Samurai, Mo Forza, River Boyne, and Om. Definitely check out one of Santa Anita’s best grass races for 3-year-olds!
Keeneland Racecourse
Rood and Riddle Dowager Stakes – 1 ½ miles turf – $125,000
Top Breeders’ Cup Distaff contender Vexatious began her career on the turf. She won the 2018 running of the Dowager Stakes. Last year, Gentle Ruler took top prize. Ruler is in great form, having won her last couple of races. There’s a good chance she shows up in the starting gate on Sunday to defend her Dowager title.
Woodbine Racetrack
Grade 2 Nearctic Stakes – 6 furlongs turf – $250,000
Some of the best sprinting turfers in North America, maybe, the world, could show up and run in the Nearctic Stakes on Sunday. City Boy, Hembree, and Field of Courage, the last 3 winners are all active. City Boy most definitely figures to enter the starting gate.
Grade 1 Northern Dancer – 1 ½ miles turf – $300,000
The Northern Dancer is a big time prep for the Breeders’ Cup Turf on Nov. 7. That’s why Godolphin runner Old Persian, who took top honors last year, figures to go off the favorite to repeat his 2019 Northern Dancer run.
Grade 1 E.P. Taylor Stakes – 1 ¼ miles turf – $600,000
There’s a good chance Woodbine Mile winner Starship Jubilee runs in the E.P. Taylor Stakes. The multiple grade one winner won this race last year. This year, Jubilee has 5 wins and a fourth place finish from 6 races. Take her seriously if she goes.

Horse Racing Odds & Picks for Top Stakes Races Oct. 24-25
Saturday, Oct. 24 Races
Belmont Park
Ticonderoga Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $150,000
Mohawk Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $150,000
Empire Distaff Stakes – 1 1/16 miles dirt – $175,000
Empire Classic Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $175,000
6-year-old mare Fifty Five has won the Ticonderoga Stakes for three years in a row. The 6-year-old mare remains active, which means she figures to show up in the starting gate. She also figure to offer underlay odds. So, try to beat her if you see something that peaks your interest.
Gucci Factor won this race last year. The 7-year-old gelding could enter the starting gate versus H. James Bond trained Rinaldi. The 4-year-old Posse sired gelding beat Dot Matrix in his last, the West Point Stakes at Saratoga in early join. Rinaldi could be tough to beat on Saturday.
Top New York bred 6-year-old mare Ratajkowski could enter the starting gate in the 2020 Empire Distaff Stakes to defend her 2019 title. Trained by Graham Motion, Rtajkowski won the Critical Eye at Belmont Park last June. She loves Big Sandy. So, if she does run, take her seriously.
In the Empire Classic Stakes on Saturday, most wagers could flow to 6-year-old Mr. Buff. The 2019 winner failed against top Breeders’ Cup Classic contender Improbable in the Grade 1 Whitney in his last. Mr. Buff is more effective versus lower stakes level horses like what he ran against in last year’s Empire Classic Stakes. If Mr. Buff does run, he’s likely to face Chestertown, and City Man, the top two finishers in the Albany Stakes.
Santa Anita Park
Grade 3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes – 5 ½ furlongs turf – $100,000
Last year’s Senator Ken Maddy Stakes winner, Just Grazed me, ran on October 10. Unless trainer Phillip D’Amato bring her back after two weeks, she’s not likely to defend her title. No worries. There are plenty of fast sprinters that will show up in the starting gate to contest this Grade 3 stakes race at Santa Anita on October 24.
Sunday, Oct. 25 Races
Belmont Park
Grade 3 Athenia – 1 1/16 miles turf – $100,000
Trainer Christophe Clement plans on saddling two in the Grade 3 Athenia on Sunday. Both Feel Glorious and Call Me Love are capable of winning the Athenia with a top effort. No Mo Lady and Chaleur are a couple of other contenders.
Santa Anita Park
Grade 2 Goldikova Stakes – 1 mile turf – $200,000
Neil Drysdale trained 5-year-old mare Toinette figures to give it another go on Sunday. Last year’s Goldikova winner hasn’t raced since this past July. Drysdale trained Da Hoss to win the 1998 BC Mile after not racing for almost two years, though. Neil often gets horses ready off long layoffs. If Toinette enters the starting gate, be sure she’s ready to defend her title.

Woodbine Racecourse
Overskate Stakes – 7 ½ furlongs turf – $100,000
Don’t be surprised if the last three finishers from the 2019 Overskate Stakes ends up in the starting gate for the 2020 version. Dixie’s Gamble won the race. Because last year’s winner hasn’t raced since November 2019, we shouldn’t expect him to go off the chalk, though.
Del Mar Racetrack
Kathryn Crosby Stakes – 1 mile turf – $75,000
Del Mar, where the turf meets the surf, starts their late fall meet this week. The top race on Saturday is the $75,000 Kathryn Crosby Stakes going a mile over the turf. Last year’s winner, Wicked Old Fashion, finished third in the Golden Poppy in June. She’ll attract action if trainer Victor Trujillo enters her in the Kathryn Crosby.
Golden Gate Fields
Pike Place Dancer Stakes – 1 mile turf – $75,000
Golden Gate didn’t run the Pike Place Dancer Stakes in 2019. It’s difficult to know what horses will show up to run at GG Fields on Saturday. One thing we do know? The stakes action is light this weekend, which means some tough SoCal horses could make the trip up the I-5 to the NorCal racetrack.
Belmont Park
Zagora Stakes – 1 ½ miles turf – $80,000
Awad Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $80,000
Grade 3 Bold Ruler – 7 furlongs dirt – $100,000
2019 Zagora winner Empressof the Nile hasn’t raced since February. This is the type of event trainer Graham Motion loves for his 6-year-old mare, though. She’s not good enough to contend with graded stakes runners. She is good enough to win lower-level stakes like the Zagora. Expect Empressof the Nile to enter the starting gate on Nov. 1
The Awad Stakes is for 2-year-old colts. The top juvenile turf runners will contend on Friday, Nov. 6 in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. That could be a good thing from a betting point-of-view. No matter which youngsters show up for the Awad, it should be a competitive race with no clear-cut favorite.
The weekend’s top event is the Grade 3 Bold Ruler. Maximum Security won the 2019 Bold Ruler. This year, horses like Stan the Man, Funny Guy, Diamond King, and Yorkton figure to contest for the win money because they’re not good enough to run at the Breeders’ Cup.
That’s a good thing for us. Just like the Awad Stakes, and the Zagora, when top class horses don’t enter into lower level stakes, there’s a better chance of making money on the race.
Don’t settle for short prices in any stakes race this weekend. The big name runners are taking the next two weeks off, which means longshot equines could get it done at overlay odds.

Horse Racing Odds & Picks October 11th Edition
Top Stakes Races for the Week
When: Wednesday, Oct. 13 – Sunday, Oct. 17
Keeneland Race Course – Wednesday, Oct. 13
Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $200,000
Sixteen horses have entered for the Grade 2 Jessamine on Wednesday. If there aren’t any scratches, the field should be around 10 to, maybe, 14 runners. If that happens, Wayne Catalano trained Dressed, Opalina from the Richard Rodriguez barn, and Misthaven trained by Joe Sharp will go off the lukewarm favorites.
Keeneland Race Course – Friday, Oct. 15
Grade 3 – Franklin County Stakes – 5 ½ furlongs turf – $150,000
Expect a full field for the Franklin County Stakes on Friday. Toby’s Heart, trained by Brian Lynch, won the $500,000 Music City Stakes at Kentucky Downs in September. Toby is a nominee for the Franklin County. If the Lynch runner goes, the filly should battle Michael Stidham trained Advocating for favoritism.
Belmont Park – Saturday, Oct. 16
Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes – 1 1/8 miles turf – $200,000
At least six horses will run in the Grad 2 Sands Point. The second, third, and fourth place finishers from the Pebbles Stakes should garner the most attention. Jordan’s Leo finished second. Runaway Rumour finished third, and Our Flash Drive finished fourth.
Keeneland Race Course – Saturday, Oct. 16
Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup – 1 1/8 miles turf – $500,000
The weekend’s top race is a the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup. Keeneland has invited eleven fillies to take part in the event. Chad Brown trained Technical Analysis will be one of the favorites. Should she run, so will Aidan O’Brien charge Empress Josephine. If Army Wife, trained by Mike Maker, enters, she will also attract some play.
Santa Anita Park – Saturday, Oct. 16
California Distaff Handicap – 6 ½ furlongs turf – $100,000
A full field is expected for the California Distaff Handicap. Warren’s Showtime, should trainer Craig Lewis enter, may go off the favorite. Showtime won the Grade 3 Wilshire in June. Pulpit Rider beat Warren’s Showtime to win the Solano Beach. If Mike Pyupe enters the six-year-old mare, she too could vie for favoritism.
Belmont Park – Sunday, Oct. 17
Floral Park Stakes – 6 furlongs turf – $150,000
Lead Guitar won the 2020 Floral Park. Fire Key won in 2018 and 2019. The Floral Park won’t produce a Breeders’ Cup runner. It could produce a high-paying win mutuel, though. So make sure to handicap the Floral Park Stakes on Sunday.

Grade 3 Sycamore Stakes – 1 ½ miles turf – $150,000
At least ten horses could run in the Grade 3 Sycamore on Friday. 6-year-old gelding Spooky Channel could go off the favorite. Spooky finished second in the Kentucky Downs Preview Turf Cup in its last. A couple of equines with a shot include two Mike Maker trainees, Ajourneytofreedom and Glynn county. Hierarchy, from Joe Sharp’s barn, is another that will attract attention.
Belmont Park – Saturday, Oct. 23
Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes – 1 1/8 miles turf – $400,000
The biggest race of the weekend is the Grade 2 Hill Prince. Like always, if it’s a grass race at Belmont, Chad Brown has multiple contenders. Brown is pointing Founder, Sifting Sands, and Public Sector to the Hill Prince. Of the three, Public Sector will attract the most action. The Kingman sired 3-year-old has won two straight, including the Grade 3 Saranac in his last. Cristophe Clement puts the saddle on Soldier Rising, the Grade 1 Saratoga Derby second place finisher. Todd Pletcher should enter Never Surprised, who finished second to Public Sector in the Grade 3 Saranac.
Grade 3 Noble Damsel – 1 mile turf – $200,000
At least eight runners will enter the Noble Damsel starting gate. Of the eight, Chad Brown trained Tamahere should go off one of the favorites. Tamahere won the Violet Stakes in her last. Anthony Dutrow trained High Opinion finished second behind Viadera in the Grade 2 Ballston Spa in her last. High Opinion should be one of the choices as will Saffie Joseph Jr. trained Shifty She.
Keeneland Race Course – Saturday, Oct. 23
Grade 2 Lexus Raven Run Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – $250,000
Don’t be surprised if at least eleven runners step into the starting gate for the Grade 2 Raven Run. The 7-furlong race is the final prep for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint and the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Among the contenders, 3-year-old filly Souper Sensational looks tough to beat. She finished second in the Grade 1 Test and second in the Grade 2 Prioress in her last couple of races. Cilla, who has won three of her last four and two straight, may not run and instead train up to the BC Filly & Mare Sprint.
Keeneland Race Course – Sunday, Oct. 24
Grade 3 Rood & Riddle Dowager Stakes – 1 ½ miles turf – $150,000
Nine horses have signed up for the Grade 3 Rood & Riddle Dowager Stakes. Grade 3 winner La Lune finished well in the Kentucky Downs Ladies Marathon to grab second behind Family Way. La Lune could go off at overlay odds. Brad Cox trained Adventuring looks to be in top form after winning the Dueling Ground Oaks in her last. She’ll be one of the favorites.

Top Stakes Races for the Week
When: Friday, Oct. 29 – Sunday, Oct. 31
Keeneland Race Course – Friday, Oct. 29
Grade 3 Rubicon Valley View Stakes – 1 1/16 miles turf – $150,000
Oyster Box, trained by Graham Motion, should go off the favorite. Kenny McPeek’s Crazy Beautiful will get some play. Navratilova and Lady Speightspere could get a few looks.
The horse to really consider could be Flown from the Brendan Walsh barn. The Kitten’s Joy sired runner finished third behind Oyster Box in the Grade 3 Pucker Up Stakes in her last. Flown might be sitting on a big try.
Keeneland Race Course – Saturday, Oct. 30
Grade 2 Hagyard Fayette Stakes – 1 1/8 miles dirt – $200,000
Grade 1 Woodward fourth-place finisher Code of Honor leads a field of eight in what should be a fantastic running of the Grade 2 Fayette Stakes. Code of Honor, no doubt, will go off the big time chalk.
Sleepy Eyes Todd finished second in the Grade 2 Charles Town Classic behind Woodward winner Art Collector in his last. Sleepy will have to win this off the bench since the CT Classic happens in late August.
King Fury returns to graded stakes competition after dominating a field of lesser in the Bourbon Trail. Horseplayers must take Curlin’s son seriously because when trainer Kenny McPeek gets them to run well, his horses can put together two to three straight winning performances.
Santa Anita Park – Saturday, Oct. 30
Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes – 1 mile turf – $100,000
Spanish Loveaffair heads to the Great Race Place after winning the ungraded Pebbles Stakes at Belmont in her last. Loveaffair should garner plenty of betting attention.
Madone, trained by Simon Callaghan, is the home track runner to beat. The Vancouver sired miss won the Grade 2 San Clemente a couple of races ago. The fifth place finish in the Jockey Club Oaks wasn’t bad because the field in the Oaks towers over the one in this.
Peter Miller trained Zero Tolerance heads into this off a win. She’ll also garner action.
Belmont Park – Sunday, Oct. 31
Grade 3 Bold Ruler Stakes – 7 furlongs dirt – $200,000
Seven quality runners will line up for the Grade 3 Bold Ruler on Sunday. Among the seven, Plainsman, trained by Brad Cox, should go off as one of the chalks. Plainsman won the Grade 3 Ack Ack in the six-year-old’s last.
Second-place Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap finisher Wendell Fong will also get a look. Wendell won the Fireplug at Laurel in the race before.
Drafted, Wondrwherecraigis, Lil Commissioner, Mr. Phil, and Endorsed should also run. Among those five, Wondrwherecraigis might get the most play since the gelding goes for scorching trainer Brittany Russell.
Santa Anita Park – Sunday, Oct. 31
Grade 2 Twilight Derby – 1 1/8 miles turf – $200,000
Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World returns to the turf after four straight losses over dirt. Rock Your World won his first two races on the grass. The John Sadler runner figures to go off at underlay odds.
If you’re looking for value, consider Peter Miller trained None Above The Law. The Krakonite sired runner has won two straight, including the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby in his last. Flashiest, who finished second in the Del Mar Derby, and Subconscious from the Richard Mandell barn could also challenge Rock.

2022 Top Stakes to Bet On: 6 Great Graded Races Highlights the Weekend Action
Previous Betting News
The final preps for the 2022 Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships happens this week. Top races include the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor at Woodbine, the Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic at the Big A, Grade 1 American Pharoah and Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes both at Santa Anita Park. Check out top plays and Horse Racing Odds for the Top Stakes Races of the Week from Saturday, October 8th. You can also visit our Online Racebook to place your bets on active racetracks.
Horse Racing Odds, Picks, and Betting Analysis | October 3rd Edition
Woodbine | Saturday, Oct. 8
Grade 1 E.P. Taylor – 1 ¼ miles turf – 3 year olds & up
Chad Brown plans on running up to eight horses in the E.P. Taylor. The eight are Technical Analysis, Rougir, Rocky Sky, Virginia Joy, Flight Lady, Fluffy Socks, Kalifornia Queen, and Lemista. Brad Cox wants to run Adventuring while Cristophe Clement will go with Plum Ali. No doubt, the winner must go through the Brown horses before entering the winner’s circle.
Belmont at the Big A | Saturday, Oct. 8
Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic – 1 ½ miles turf – 3 year olds & up
The usual group of graded stakes level turf runners will step into the starting gate at Aqueduct on Saturday. Gufo, Rockemperor, and Adhamo will lead the charge. War Like Goddess will attract plenty of money.
Keeneland | Saturday, Oct. 8
Grade 1 Keeneland Turf Mile – 1 mile turf – 3 year olds & up
The Keeneland Turf Mile could attract up to 13 runners. Brad Cox trained Set Piece has fans. So does Somelikeithotbrown from the Mike Maker barn. Both of Chad Brown’s horses, Masen and Emaraaty, will get some play. Ivar, from the Paulo Lobo barn, may go off the chalk.
Grade 1 First Lady Stakes – 1 mile turf – fillies & mares
Brown is debating on running Technical Analysis in the First Lady Stakes. Chad might go with In Italian and Regal Glory. Two from Michael Stidham’s, Princess Grace and Alms, will run.
Santa Anita | Saturday, Oct. 8
Grade 1 American Pharoah – 1 1/16 miles turf – 2 year olds
In the past, Bob Baffert has owned this race. The 2022 American Pharoah Stakes should be no different. Havnameltdown, Carmel Road, Newgate, National Treasure, and Hejazi will all run. So will likely chalk Cave Rock.
If Baffert saddles Cave Rock, other trainers may look elsewhere. So although John Shirreffs plans on running Skinner, and Doug O’Neil wants to saddle Onata and Synctactic for this, those two trainers might skip the Pharoah for a different race.
The same thinking goes for Peter Miller’s Giver Not a Taker. Cave Rock is undefeated and dominated the Grade 1 Dekl Mar Futurity. Already, the son of Arrogate is the chalk to win the 2023 Kentucky Derby.
Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes – 1/14 miles turf – fillies & mares
At least nine runners will line up for the Rodeo Drive Stakes on Saturday. Chad Brown may saddle Fluffy Socks in this event instead of running the graded placed filly in the E.P. Taylor Stakes.
Paul D’Amato plans on saddling four: Counterparty Risk, Burgoo Alley, Going Global, and Going to Vegas. Simon Callaghan’s Bellamore and Leonard Powell’s Neige Blanche will attract action.

2022 Top Stakes to Bet On: 5 Great Graded Races In Keeneland, Woodbine, Aqueduct
Previous Betting News
Five graded races are on this weekend’s thoroughbred racing calendar. Keeneland runs the Grade 3 Sycamore and the Grade 1 QEII Challenge Cup on Saturday. Then on Sunday, the Lexington, Kentucky based track runs the Grade 3 Franklin Stakes. On Saturday, Aqueduct runs the Grade 2 Sands Point. Check out top plays and Horse Racing Odds for the Top Stakes Races of the Week from Friday, October 14th to Sunday, October 16th. You can also visit our Online Racebook to place your bets on active racetracks.
Horse Racing Odds, Picks, and Betting Analysis | October 10th Edition
Keeneland | Friday, Oct. 14
Grade 3 Sycamore – 1 ½ miles turf – 3 year olds & up
Connections for fourteen runners are looking to enter the Grade 3 Sycamore. No doubt, the runner that will attract the most action is Arklow trained by Brad Cox. Red Knight, Highland Chief from the Graham Motion barn, Channel Maker trained by Bill Mott, and Mike Maker trained Keystone Field should also attract money.
Woodbine | Saturday, Oct. 15
Grade 3 Ontario Fashion – 6 furlongs artificial – 3 year olds & up
No word yet on which runners will line up for the Ontario Fashion. Amalfi Coast won last year’s running followed by Summer Sunday and Golden Vision. In 2020, Painting beat Victory Kingdom and Sav. No matter who ends up in the starting gate, one thing is for sure, the Ontario Fashion should be an excellent, competitive race. Make sure to handicap every entrant before throwing down money.
Aqueduct | Saturday, Oct. 15
Grade 2 Sands Point – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year old fillies
At least five runners are pointing to the Grade 2 Sands Point. Chad Brown, like he often does in turf races at a New York track, should saddle the favorite in Eminent Victor. The 3-year-old filly finished fifth in the Lake Placid in her last.
She’s better than that. We should expect a bounce back performance for sure. Trainer Christophe Clement plans on saddling a couple.
The first is Pizza Bianca. She won the Hilltop in May and will look to bounce back after a disappointing eighth in the Grade 1 Coronation Stakes at Ascot in her last.
Clements other runner is Canisy. She finished fifth in the Grade 3 Jockey Club Oaks in her last. Vergara and Spirit of Glory may also run.
Keeneland | Saturday, Oct. 15
Grade 1 QEII Challenge Cup – 1 1/8 miles turf – 3 year olds
Horseplayers should expect a full field for this Saturday’s QEII Challenge Cup. No doubt, the two favorites will be Dolce Zel and McKulick, both from the Chad Brown barn.
Dolce Zel finished third in the Grade 2 Lake Placid in her last. Before the Lake Placid, Dolce had won the Grade 3 Lake George.
McKulick finished third in the Saratoga Oaks two races back. She won the Grade 3 Jockey Club Oaks in her last. Based on McKulick’s and Dolce Zel’s form, all other entrants may be running for third.
Keeneland | Sunday, Oct. 16
Grade 3 Franklin Stakes – 5 ½ furlongs dirt – 3 year old fillies & up
Eight runners are confirmed for Sunday’s Franklin Stakes. Wesley Ward will saddle a couple, Illegal Smile and Twilight Gleaming.
Brad Cox saddles Caravel. Brian Lynch has a contender in Toby’s Heart. Another contender looks to be Eddie Keneally trained Brooke Marie. Make sure to handicap this ultra-competitive event.
