Given that spring has just arrived, it certainly seems much too early to be talking about college football. The arrival of the new season, though, means that teams will have their spring games, where we can get our first look at new players looking to land a spot on the starting roster of their chosen school. In the grand scheme of things, these spring games really don’t mean that much, so I would definitely not be basing my pick on something I see in April when we are still months away from the start of the regular season. We do, though, still have a decent idea of what most rosters will look like, as do the bookies, which is why the odds are already up for the coming season. Georgia Bulldogs (+225)
Zero surprise here when you consider that Georgia will be coming into the season looking to go for the threepeat after winning the last two National Championships. They will have some spots to fill, as they once again lost a ton of players to the draft. That was the same story last year, when they had 15 players head to the NFL, so it’s not like they haven’t done this before. The key spot to be filled, though, is at QB, with Stetson Bennett one of the players whose time is up in the college game. You have to trust Kirby Smart and his recruiting, so I’m sure the Dawgs will be fine.

Alabama Crimson Tide (+500)
The fact of the matter is that there does not appear to be a true challenger to the Crimson Tide in the SEC West, just as there doesn’t appear to be one for Georgia in the East. Alabama will have the same issue as Georgia in that they will have a new starting QB under center, with Bryce Young heading to the NFL. Again, Nick Saban is a master of recruitment, so Alabama will be fine, too. Their issue is that they will need to be a good deal more disciplined than they were last season. Look for Saban to fix that quickly.

Ohio State Buckeyes (+600)
The expectation is that the Buckeyes should be in the playoffs and contending for a National Championship every single year. The fact that they have gone 11-2 and missed the playoffs in each of the past 2 seasons is not something that will sit well with fans of this team. Losing to Michigan in both of those seasons is also something that will not be considered acceptable. It’s hard to imagine that Ohio State will miss out on the postseason in 3 straight seasons, but can they get past Michigan in the Big Ten?

Michigan Wolverines (+1000)
The Wolverines have been knocking on the National Championship door in each of the last two seasons, but they have not made it past the semi-finals. They lost to Georgia, the eventual champions, a couple of years ago, and where then stunned by TCU last season. This is a team that has not truly made the most of their opportunities, but you have to think that they will be in the mix again this season, with their meeting against Ohio State once again being the game that decides which of these two teams make the playoffs.
