Save for a 3-1 loss to Paraguay, Ecuador played well during FIFA World Cup Qualifying, drawing 1-1 with Argentina, Peru, and Brazil. 

The Ecuadorians finished World Cup Qualifying with 26  points, just 2 points behind Uruguay. By qualifying for the World Cup Ecuador beat out more heavily favored teams Peru, Colombia, and Chile.

Why Ecuador will move to the next round

Ecuador faces few world beaters in Group A. The Netherlands is one of the best soccer nations on the planet. But Senegal, even with Sadio Mane, isn’t a great team. Nor is Qatar. 

Qatar is the home nation, which is why they will play in this year’s World Cup. If Qatar wasn’t the home nation, they most likely wouldn’t have secured a WC spot. So even if Ecuador falls to the Netherlands, they can make up ground versus Qatar and Senegal. 

Why Ecuador won’t move to the next round

As long as Sadio Mane plays, Senegal will have more of a shot to make it to the knockout stage than Ecuador. Mane is a superstar for Liverpool.

He and Senegal rolled through the AFC during World Cup Qualifying. Qatar should have no chance, but Senegal has a big chance to keep Ecuador from moving past the group stage. 

Final Analysis – Ecuador has a big shot to finish second in Group A 

Senegal is a good team for sure, but Ecuador has an edge. The problem Senegal will face is that they secured their World Cup spot after beating up fellow African continent nations. 

Ecuador had to play some very good national teams in CONMENBOL to notch their ticket to the World Cup. The Ecuadorians faced two of the best teams on the planet, Brarzil and Argentina, and hung with both.

The Ecuadorians were just two points off FIFA’s thirteenth ranked squad, Uruguay. Not only that, but Ecuador has developed into an incredibly talented defensive squad. 

Don’t expect Ecuador to beat the Netherlands. But Ecuador should get past both Qatar and Senegal and make it to the Round of 16.
